ResponsibilitiesWhat you'll be challenged to do:TranSystems has an immediate opening for an Entry Level Bridge Engineer in our Kansas City office. This position includes structural design, rehabilitation, and inspection of bridges, tunnels, overhead structures, rataining walls, and other structures along with the preparation of load ratings, construction documents, specifications, and cost estimates. In addition, duties may include construction inspection services. Day-to-day assignments and technical guidance will be provided by current staff. Applicants must possess strong technical skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to travel for projects, the ability to work in the field conducting bridge inspections and site visits up to 35% of the time, and must be able to work well in a team environment on multi-disciplinary projects. This position is located in the Kansas City Metro area with no relocation assistance.General Duties & Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Assists others in analyzing information and data to perform routine or standard structural design and bridge load rating tasks.
  • Assist others in analyzing information and data in preparing designs of complex design or load rating tasks.
  • Assist others in preparing probable cost of construction or other cost estimating tasks.
  • May be asked to participate in non-design engineering activities such as construction inspection and materials testing, surveying, CADD production, and field data collection.
  • Receives instructions from Project Manager or Senior Project Engineers as to the general results expected.
  • Research design options and document findings for Senior Project Engineers.
  • Maintains project database by writing computer programs, entering and backing up data.
  • Research code requirements.
  • Prepare administrative reports required for project permits, inspection findings, load ratings, or other clients’ requirements.
  • Keeps Project Managers and Supervisor informed of workload and any changes in project schedule or scope or additional services.
  • Take part as a member of field crew on structure inspection assignments. Take photos, measurements, and produce inspection sketches.
  • Ability to clearly describe field observations and convey information with sketches and technical writing.
  • Operate personnel lift equipment, climb ladders, install traffic control devices or structural testing elements and other work in support of inspection activities.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies and local industry organizations.
QualificationsWhat you bring to our firm:
  • Bachelor’s degree in structural engineering or civil engineering with an emphasis in structures from an ABET-accredited university or college.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam required.
  • 0 to 4 years of experience in structural bridge engineering assignments.
  • Familiarity with AASHTO, AREMA, AISC and ACI design codes.
  • Individuals should be competent in reading plans and shop drawings, and in evaluating contractor compliance with construction plans and specifications.
  • Team-oriented engineer with strong communication skills, well organized with good time management practices.
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite.
  • Experience with structural design software (e.g. STAAD, RISA SAP2000, etc.).
  • Actively engages multiple perspectives when solving problems, seeks to learn from peers, and encourages reciprocal learning among team members.
What we’d prefer for you to bring to our firm:
  • NBIS Routine or Fracture Critical Bridge inspection experience.
  • National Highway Institute certification in Inspection of In-Service Bridges.
  • National Highway Institute certification in Inspection of Fracture Critical Bridges.
  • Experience in LRFD & LRFR of highway bridges.
  • Experience in railroad structures design per AREMA Manual for Railway Engineering.
  • MoDOT, KDOT, IowaDOT and NDOT bridge consulting experience.
  • The preferred candidate will have a structural engineering background, knowledge of MicroStation, AutoCAD, CSI Bridge, AASHTOWare BrR, Midas, LEAP Bridge, MDX, and STAAD, and RISA, and some experience with structural engineering design drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Have passed the Professional Engineer (PE) Exam or is a registered PE.
  • Master’s degree in structural engineering.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.
