Job Description:SummaryThe Unit Assistant assists nurses with individual activities of daily living as well as certain treatments for patient care under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) according to established policies, procedures and guidelines. Additionally, this position provides clerical, secretarial and receptionist support for the unit. Coordinates the patient flow process within the practice by answering the phone, scheduling appointments, and may be required to schedule tests and/or procedures. As a visible contact person for the unit, the unit assistant demonstrates respect, kindness, compassion, courteousness and professionalism to patients, families and visitors. This position will demonstrate excellent customer service to a diverse patient population.
Responsibilities(50%)* Under the direction of the RN, will assist with patient care. The RN will retain the primary duties of obtaining vital signs and performance of ADL’s for patients. Perform basic nurse’s aide skills as outlined in orientation, competencies, policy and procedures to assist unit RN’s in the performance of patient care. Perform morning glucometer checks and as needed when directed by an RN. Occasionally utilized as a Patient Safety Companion as needed.(25%)* Act as the MLINE liaison for Telemedicine consults with tertiary care centers, answer phone calls in a timely manner, make patient follow-up appointments and other general clerical duties as instructed by the unit Manager. Must exhibit good situational awareness of the unit, recognize immediate needs and act appropriately, and be a positive representation of ICU/PCU to visitors.(25%)* Maintains a clean, safe and orderly unit. Responsible for general room preparation and stocking as appropriate in patient rooms and medication room.
Certifications and LicensuresBLS - Basic Life Support Required Equivalent Experience - Within 1 month of hire or transferPCT - MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN Certification Required Equivalent Experience - Must hold an internal MidMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification or a current State of Michigan registry document as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or completion of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification culminating in licensure in the state of Michigan or completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program culminating in licensure in the State of Michigan or successful completion of one semester of nursing clinical education by an Accredited Registered Nurse Program. Effective 11/22/2019, we can also accept a Medical Assistant with the following: Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologist (AMT), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), OR equivalent Medical Assistant Credential such as Certified Clinical Medical Assistant CCMA, etc. *For current PCT’s with an expired CNA certification, EMT certification, or a lapsed LPN license, an opportunity to achieve an internal MidMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification will be offered*TEAM ADVANCED - Techniques for Effective Aggression Mgt Required Equivalent Experience - Within 6 months of hire or transfer (Employees who are in this position on or before 12/31/2023 will have 24 months to complete this certification)

Other InformationEXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:Previous direct patient care experience preferred. One or two years of experience in a healthcare setting; hospital, physician’s office or insurance company with exposure to medical terminology preferred. Strong organizational and prioritization skills Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death. Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position. Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description. Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching. Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis. Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must be able to occasionally (0-33%of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% or the workday) 10 lbs.
