- Must be able to operate and perform basic computer programs associated with documentation and record keeping in the department
- Must demonstrate a degree of independent judgment and critical thinking, consulting with the manager when appropriate
- Must be able to move from task to task, maintaining quality and efficiency
- Communicates and shares information with providers and team members, both verbally and written

The job produces some physical demands. Typical of jobs that include regular walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, and some lifting of light weight objects.
Duties dependent on specific department
- Oversees and is accountable for supervising all system-wide clinical and technical functions related to specialty
- Responsible for overall supervision of the section staff which includes recommendations on hiring, counseling and disciplinary actions of the staff.
- Develop and monitor financial budgets, as well as quality assurance monitors to assess section performance and ensure established targets are achieved

- Promotes and develops inter-departmental teamwork throughout the laboratory and specific department
- Works with laboratory section head and one-up to manage workload and staffing levels for optimal patient care.
- Ensures section personnel compliance to laboratory’s policies and procedures.
- Schedules section personnel to ensure processes are performed and test results are available to meet the clinical needs of healthcare providers.
- Working in conjunction with Purchasing, Central Distribution and vendors, assists in maintaining adequate supplies and inventory for section.
- Assists the manager with work review and consults with pathologists as required.
- Uses critical thinking to resolve technical problems in procedures and instrumentation.
- Acts as a resource for healthcare providers on matters relating to department testing methodology and quality concerns.
- Hires and conducts personnel performance evaluations
- Ensures department staff adhere to the laboratory’s chemical and biohazard safety policies and procedures.
- Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify appropriate technical resource prior to reporting patient test results
- Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
- Assists in evaluating and selecting new testing methods and instrumentation.
- Participates in Laboratory Quality Program activities with emphasis on assuring compliance with training, safety, laboratory, hospital, and accreditation standards
- Maintains competencies and certification through approved methods of continuing education.
- Assists in orienting and training new laboratory employees and students in pre-analytical, analytical (waived, moderate and high complexity) and post-analytical phases of testing, as appropriate to job description.
- Participates as a contributing member to assigned Bronson System committees.

- Responsible for department’s specimen processing, test performance and test result reporting accuracy.
- Maintain records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies ensuring all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, maintenance and troubleshooting are compliant.
- Ensures all critical values and tests are timely reported to an appropriate healthcare provider
- Performs only tests that they have trained in and demonstrated competency.
- Follows the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
- Follows good laboratory practices with reagent stability and storage.
- Follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
- Communicates all critical values and tests to an appropriate healthcare provider.
