Overview:Compensation: Min $19.24 Max $29.65Employee assists the provider in patient care, computer electronic medical record documentation, charting and ordering tests, prior authorizing referral appointments and/or medications, refilling medications, administering immunizations, assisting with procedures, responsible for performing electocardiographic (EKG) procedures on a variety of patient populations in multiple care settings. This includes performing EKGs on inpatients, outpatients, surgical, and emergency patients, as well as placing Holter monitors, responding to emergency codes, and managing documentation and data processing in support of the cardiology department's diagnostic functions and patient education. Assists in all other duties as needed for the physician office/clinic under the direction and assistance of the Practice Manager. Responsibilities:ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Check patients into exam room and obtain pertinent information, vitals, medications, etc. pertaining to the clinic visit then assist provider as needed.
  • Sets up for examinations and/or procedures with necessary supplies and instruments as directed by provider then assists provider as needed. Ensures all instruments are properly cleaned and sterilized for the next procedure.
  • Stocks and maintains adequate medical supplies in exam rooms and within clinic supply area, reordering as needed. Stocks and maintains adequate supplies of vaccines and other medications, reordering as needed with assistance of Practice Manager. Follows direction of provider regarding supplies or vaccines needed.
  • Responds to incoming phone calls and/or messages from patients, other providers, insurance companies, pharmacies regarding medical or insurance questions, referring to the provider or nurse to assist you as needed. Also input any faxed Rx refill requests into electronic record then sends to appropriate provider for completion.
  • Maintains an outline for procedures to assist other personnel when helping the nurse and provider.
  • Obtains insurance referrals for patient appointments with other providers. Obtain prior authorization for medications as directed by nurse or provider. This job function varies amongst providers.
  • Charts into record, paper or electronic, vital signs, medications, histories, immunizations, and other necessary information as directed.
  • Administers immunizations, vaccines, contraceptive injections, etc. as directed, following protocol for patient, following nurse or provider directions. Document: injection site, Lot/NDC #, and vaccine into the electronic medical record.
  • Performs EKGs, spirometry, diabetic glucose checks i.e., Accuchecks, waived CLIA lab tests i.e., dip urinalysis, pulse oximetry, etc., as ordered by nurse or provider. Present results to nurse or provider then document these into electronic medical record.
  • Performs patient education as directed by nurse or provider i.e., nebulizer treatments, finger stick glucose checks, etc.
  • Performs nursing visits, i.e., blood pressure checks, staple/stitch removal, shots only visit, weight check, etc. as directed by nurse or provider.
  • Assists with front office duties, i.e., schedule appointments, prepare charts, answer phone, enters computer data into the electronic medical record, and file as needed. Assists with all other duties as needed within the clinic to ensure efficiency and productivity.
  • Position may require working variable hours including nights and weekends and within various specialties.
  • Perform routine and stat 12-lead EKGs on patients in various settings (inpatients, outpatients, ER patients, day surgery, and the operating room).
  • Prepare Patients for procedures by explaining the test, answering questions and properly placing electrodes.
  • Monitor equipment for proper functioning and ensure accurate data capture.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and document procedures in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
  • Recognize and report abnormal or critical findings promptly to the appropriate clinical personnel.
  • Transport EKG machines and supplies to patient rooms or departments as needed.
  • Place and remove Holter monitors on inpatients and outpatients
  • Respond to all emergency situations, including Code Blue, Rapid Response, Code Stroke, and trauma activations.
  • Register Zio monitors, export results, and fax reports to appropriate providers or departments.
  • Monitor and check Cardioserver/Link for incoming EKGs and ensure data is transmitted and archived correctly.
  • Enter and scan physician orders into the EMR accurately and timely.
  • Work with Patient Financial Services to verify insurance coverage and authorization (for Holter monitor placement).
  • Schedule Holter monitors appointments and coordinate follow-up instructions with patients.
  • Answer incoming phone calls professionally, aiding, or redirecting as appropriate.
  • Clean, maintain and trouble shoot EKG equipment according to infection control and departmental protocols.
  • Restock supplies in EKG machines and work areas to ensure daily readiness
  • Collaborate closely with Cardiologist, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure quality patient care.
  • Check workqueue in the EMR daily for new or pending orders, ensuring timely completion.
  • Monitor fax queue, print new faxes, and direct documentation to the appropriate personnel or patient charts.
  • Maintain accurate patient records, documentation, and reports in Cardio-Server or EMR system.
  • Maintain equipment, perform quality control checks, and report malfunctions promptly.
  • Comply with infection control, HIPAA, and patient safety standards.

Qualifications:Education: * Education- High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Current BLS certification - REQUIRED
  • Other- Bilingual and/or English-Spanish speaking preferred. The ability to work with a culturally diverse population.
Licenses/ certifications/ registrations:Preferred: Certified EKG Technician (CET) through NHA or equivalent.Experience:Required: 1 year of experience in a hospital or clinical setting.Preferred: Knowledge of cardiac anatomy and basic arrhythmia recognition. Familiarity with Holter monitors, Zio’s, and EKG interpretation systems.EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS: * Knowledge in computers, phones, and other office equipment.
  • Knowledge in insurance regulations and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge in filing procedures and record documentation.
  • Bilingual, English/Spanish, is preferred, for customer service interpretation duties.
