Beginning to intermediate level engineering work within the County Public Works Department, designed to fulfill the experience requirements necessary to obtain registration as a Professional Engineer within the State of Minnesota.The salary range reflected above is the normal hiring range for 2025. The full salary range, including longevity pay, is $30.01 - $34.70 per hour.This position is part of the Civil Service Basic Unit Employees Collective Bargaining Agreement represented by Council 5 of AFSCME.St. Louis County does not participate in E-Verify. All employees must be continuously authorized to work in the United States, for St. Louis County, on a full-time basis. St. Louis County does not provide sponsorship for employment visas.An employee in this class performs a variety of engineering tasks in one or more divisions of the Public Works Department. Successful completion of these tasks requires the application of technical skills and knowledge obtained through formal engineering education and training. Duties include assisting senior staff on engineering projects; performing design tasks and other engineering activities; reviewing, analyzing, and writing specifications and reports; researching legal and professional documents; and evaluating environmental concerns. The work is performed under the supervision of a professional engineer and the technical direction of senior engineering staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (PASS/FAIL):
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university. Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, and Landscape Architecture.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
Candidates who will meet the minimum qualifications within one year of the application closing date may be considered for a position, but cannot begin employment until they possess all minimum qualifications. If it becomes apparent a candidate will fail to meet the minimum qualifications within the one year period following the conditional offer of employment, the candidate may petition the appointing authority for a short extension of time to complete them. The decision to extend the time frame will be at the discretion of the appointing authority.NOTE: The sole purpose of this classification is to provide incumbents the experience required to obtain registration as a Professional Engineer. An incumbent who fails to become registered as a Professional Engineer, either by unsuccessful attempts at the exam, by choice, or by any other reason, is not eligible for promotion within the engineer career series. Employees in this classification are only eligible to receive the first five steps of the Graduate Engineer salary range.RATING SYSTEMS:
