  • Enables Medical Center Staff to better meet the needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing in-patients, out-patients and employees; e.g., interpretation between health care providers and patients, including, if necessary, consent forms and other written materials for procedures and other related information; interprets during procedures performed.
  • Responsible for interpreting for the clinical volume that presents during the shift along with any administrative requirements without limitation.
  • Responds to individuals and departments in a timely and respectful manner and demonstrates a team approach.
  • Relays patient-provider communications requiring interpretation in person, via phone, video and/or letter. Provides assistance, as needed, with patient registration, reminder and cancellation calls, provider calls and other communications as requested.
  • Keeps accurate statistical data as required.
  • Maintains and improves expertise through appropriate continuing education. Participates in training and informational sessions as they become available and as required by manager.
  • Explains cultural differences, practices and beliefs to healthcare providers and patient when appropriate.
  • Assist in training of new interpreters for the department, including interns.
  • May be asked to assist with other departmental tasks as required.
Required Qualifications: * High School diploma or GED required. Associate's degree in Preferred ASL as undergrad area of study preferred.
  • 1-3 years related work experience required.
  • Fluent in English and American Sign Language at a level that ensures accurate and understandable interpretation and translation.
  • Certified Sign Language Interpreter. Must have national and/or state license or certification.
  • Must have knowledge of basic anatomy, physiology and diagnostic procedures and treatments.
  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
Preferred Qualifications: * Preferably both CI & CT certification, or any subsequent equivalent of certification released after CI & CT certifications.
  • Experience interpreting in a medical setting.
  • Any competencies with Tactile interpreting, and/or working with the Deaf/Blind is preferred.

  • Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are varied, requiring analysis or interpretation of the situation using direct observation, knowledge and skills based on general precedents.
  • Independence of Action: Ability to set goals and determines how to accomplish defined results with some guidelines. Manager/Director provides broad guidance and overall direction.
  • Written Communications: Ability to read, and write in English in order to understand basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively with patients, families and other medical center staff; and respond to basic questions.
  • Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
  • Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.
  • Team Work: Ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services.
  • Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
Physical Nature of the Job:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
