Essential Job Functions
- Conducts swim team practices in a safe, friendly, and competitive environment.
- Attends all team functions including but not limited to practice and swim meets.
- Promotes swim team participation.
- Completes all required reports and submits them to the proper person or office.
- Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards.
- Acts immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of swimmers in the event of an emergency.
- Performs emergency first aid or CPR when needed.
- Observes, enforces, and educates on facility rules and regulations.
- Timely completes and submits reports, records, and other required documentation to the proper person or office.
- Assists with maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary facility.
- Maintains appropriate fitness level to perform all essential functions of the position.
- Continually practices safe work habits and alerts management about safety and other workplace concerns.
- Reports for duty at the times specified and ensures that a high standard of personal presentation and appearance is maintained per policy.
- Attends mandatory training, orientations, and other staff meetings as scheduled.
- Adheres to the policies, rules, regulations, and procedures of the City of Bryan and the Parks and Recreation Department.
- Performs other duties as required.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must possess previous experience in some phase of competitive swimming and/or experience as a Swim Coach.
- Practices and techniques of water safety.
- Practices and techniques of pool maintenance.
- Maintain fitness level (swimming, strength, and endurance) to successfully perform all position responsibilities, including the ability to pull significant weight through water.
- Remain watchful and alert at all times while on duty.
- React quickly and calmly in emergencies.
- Observe and analyze situations quickly and objectively and, using good judgment, determine an effective and efficient course of action to be taken with due regard to the task, hazards, situation, and circumstance.
- Communicate effectively with patrons, supervisors, and other employees.
- Demonstrate regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
- Comply with all City and departmental administrative directives, policies, and procedures.
- Work effectively as an individual and as a team member.
- Be constantly alert and aware of the hazards involved and apply safety practices and principles in reporting and preventing accidents.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and communicate effectively with the public and other required entities.
- Excellent swimming skills, plus skill in rescue techniques and procedures, first aid application, and resuscitation.
- Safety Training for Swim Coaches Certification.
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
- CPR, First Aid, AED for the Professional Rescuer.
Working ConditionsWork is performed in an outdoor swimming pool environment. There is exposure to various depths of water, slippery surfaces, wet and humid conditions, extreme temperatures, heights (up to 35 feet), noise, pool and cleaning chemicals, body fluids while rendering first aid and CPR, dust, pollen, and other airborne particles.
EquipmentWork shall be performed with tools, appliances and equipment approved by those agencies and bodies that have control, authority or approval of the design working ranges or limitations of those items; the employee has the responsibility to conform to those ranges and limitations.Equipment may include but is not limited to: swimming equipment, whistle, computer, and other office equipment.
