SummaryUnder direction, is responsible for teaching General Education Development (GED) course material to inmates in the Adult Detention Center or Annex; prepares lesson plans; administers tests, grades and records classroom performance; maintains attendance records; counsels and provide guidance to inmates; and performs related duties as requiredDuties and Responsibilities
  • Teaches GED course material to inmates
  • Develops, implements and revises the curriculum for GED classes
  • Prepares lesson plans
  • Administers tests, grades and records classroom work, and reports performance
  • Maintains daily, weekly, and monthly attendance records
  • Counsels and provides guidance to inmates on methods to improve educational skills and increase vocational potential
  • Assists Inmate Human Services Supervisor with preparation of GED supply budget
  • Performs related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Education or a closely related field, and one (1) year classroom experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of GED topics and curriculum development
  • Skill in communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing; skill in organizing and presenting material; skill in dealing with hostile, abusive and irrational individuals (Knowledge)
  • Ability to create and foster a constructive classroom environment; ability to maintain discipline within a classroom; ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of individuals utilizing tact and diplomacy; ability to maintain effective working relationships with inmates, outside organizations, other government agencies, co-workers and other County employees
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office
  • Must secure and maintain a pre-employment drug screen and physical
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
  • Working conditions are inside a classroom within a jail environment with constant exposure to violent or hostile people and noise. Must be able to react professionally and safely under potential or actual volatile conditions
  • Physical requirements include lifting/carrying 5-10 lbs. occasionally; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computer keyboard and basic office equipment. Subject to handling, sitting, walking, standing, bending, reaching and twisting to perform the essential functions
