- Provide advice and assistance to students on all aspects of their academic experience, including admission to the major, progression, and requirement matters for the department/ college.
- Determine barriers, distractions, and complications affecting a student's academic success, helps students recognize these key non-academic issues, and make appropriate referrals for additional therapeutic counseling and/or assistance from other units.
- Assist students in making informed decisions, setting short- and long-term goals, and fulfilling the requirements of the B.A. in IB or MCB.
- Advise students on a wide range of course possibilities and/or ways to complete degree requirements that may not be clearly defined.
- Monitor academic progress toward completion of the major, including advising students at risk of failing and/or falling below the minimum GPA requirement.
- Use a thorough knowledge of the curricular requirements of all IB and MCB major tracks, as well as various research opportunities, post-baccalaureate programs, and careers to recommend programs of study that will allow students to successfully meet their goals.
- Evaluate and advise students seeking to petition for exceptions to departmental and college requirements.
- Advise new and continuing faculty on departmental/college policies and procedures related to academic advising matters; regularly update faculty advisor handbook.
- Contribute to shared office tasks such as reviewing declaration from submissions, emails to the general accounts, reviewing advising surveys, and checking graduation requirements.
- Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including demonstrated effectiveness in active listening and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to identify and effectively address the needs of students with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Demonstrated ability to make consistent and sound recommendations, and delivers clear judgment in the application of policies affecting students.
- Demonstrated discretion and sensitivity in dealing with urgent and/or confidential situations.
- Skilled in problem identification, reasoning, and the ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
- Ability to conceptualize, design, and implement undergraduate enrichment programs, which involve multiple tasks, priorities, and deadlines.
- Ability to work under pressure to meet strict and multiple timelines.
- Strong advocate for diversity and inclusion in the workplace and student body.
- Ability to work effectively as an individual contributor, and as a team member.
- Ability to be resourceful, creative, innovative, and flexible.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Experience advising students in biology or related fields.
- Knowledge of UC Berkeley and L&S college policies, procedures, and requirements and/or comparable institutional knowledge.
- Experience with or willingness/ability to learn student information systems such as Cal Central and Berkeley Online Advising.
- Master's degree in higher education, counseling, or related field and/or equivalent experience/training.
