In 2024 alone, their programs reached over 41,000 youth, adults, and families, helping thousands with Serious Mental Illness (SMI) access mental health treatment, substance?use recovery support, LGBTQIA+ services, and housing outreach.POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Medical Director provides clinical leadership and oversight of medical services across several community-based clinics operated by Caminar. This is a critical new leadership role to oversee the delivery of all medical services across outpatient and inpatient programs, with a focus on psychiatry. This senior leader will be responsible for not only overseeing day-to-day medical operations but also strategically guiding the long-term growth and strategy of medical services.Success in this role requires balancing operational excellence with forward-looking planning. The Medical Director will monitor and evaluate the performance of frontline medical staff, including the use of KPIs to optimize staff performance and facilitate ongoing process improvements. The Director will also provide direct supervision to medical and clinical staff including a Director of Nursing based across several clinic locations.RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide medical consultation, education, and leadership support to the Director of Nursing, psychiatrists, and providers.
- Provide clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary team to promote stabilization and greater independence for clients with SMIs.
- Recruit, hire, train, and oversee psychiatrists and nursing leaders, and coach teams on efficiency, documentation, outcomes, and quality of care.
- Drive productivity, billable services, KPIs, and process improvements across admissions, assessments, clinical workflows, and service delivery.
- Lead with a collaborative leadership style that sets clear expectations while fostering a cohesive practice culture across multiple sites.
- Advise senior leadership (CEO, CCO, Executive Directors) on clinical programs, positions, and budgets; participate in meetings with payors and Medical Directors.
- Provide leadership across service lines (outpatient, intensive mental health, SUTS, LGBTQ, MHRC, etc.); prescribe medications as needed to ensure continuity of care.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers, agencies, and community partners for coordinated care and referrals.
- Establish and uphold prescribing and treatment standards (e.g., benzodiazepines, ADHD, MAT, harm reduction, polypharmacy).
- Oversee onboarding and training with the Quality Management team, including evidence-based practices, client engagement, and care pathways.
- Support integration of medical services into broader organizational revenue and sustainability strategies.
- Lead organizational change efforts toward accountable, data-driven care; balance empathy and effective leadership to inspire staff through new processes and standards.
- Conduct and oversee quality and peer reviews; define and maintain quality measures; ensure audit-ready compliance with DHCS, Medi-Cal/Medicaid, CDPH, JCAHO, and county/state requirements, including equity and cultural competency.
- Develop, standardize, and implement policies, procedures, and workflows across multiple sites; reduce variance and ensure consistent quality.
- Manage admissions, assessments, documentation protocols, and MHRC operations compliance.
- Partner with CFO and CCO on budgeting, revenue planning, and projections for medical and nursing departments.
- Drive continuous quality improvement across clinics in partnership with Senior Director of Compliance and Operations.
- Lead structured case conferences, cross-team problem solving, and two annual agency-wide trainings on medications and clinical best practices.
- Build and maintain strong partnerships with regulators, county behavioral health, managed care organizations, payors, oversight bodies, and community stakeholders; serve as liaison on clinical and medical practice issues.
- Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited medical school with a valid California license; board-certified in Psychiatry (ABPN or equivalent) with current DEA and CPR certification.
- 10+ years of medical practice, including at least 5 years serving as Medical Director with experience in psychiatry across inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Knowledge of evidence-based models such as Psychosocial Rehabilitation, ACT, Full-Service Partnership, Harm Reduction, Housing First, and Motivational Interviewing (preferred).
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and county regulations, including DHCS, Medi-Cal/Medicaid, QA standards, HIPAA, and cultural competency requirements.
- Experience with controlled substance prescribing compliance and safe prescribing practices.
- Proficiency with EHR systems (Credible preferred), CPT coding, billing, and revenue cycle compliance; experience with Human Service Information Systems and scheduling/training platforms preferred.
- Commitment to medical ethics, patient care quality, and safe clinical practices.
- Familiarity with oversight bodies such as the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the Joint Commission (JCAHO) for facilities.
- Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and senior leadership.
- Strong communication skills (oral, written, presentations) with expertise in documentation, quality management, and problem-solving.
- High degree of professionalism, confidentiality, adaptability, and dependability; dynamic self-starter with strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Windows, email, and internet navigation; ability to promote safety and security in all settings.
- Ability to meet and maintain criminal records clearance per Title XXII and other licensing regulations.
- Valid California driver's license, reliable personal vehicle, and current auto insurance; must maintain insurability under agency auto liability policies.
- Ability to pass post-offer, pre-employment medical and drug tests as required by State Community Care Licensing regulations and/or agency policies.
- May be required to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification.
