Apply today to learn more about growing your career at MGH!The Acute Psychiatry Service (APS) provides behavioral health care to pediatric and adult patients within the Emergency Department at Massachusetts General Hospital; many with medical comorbidities. APS is equipped to handle psychiatric emergencies around the clock and we typically see more than 6,000 patients a year.Schedule

  • Nights | 7 pm – 7 am
  • 36 hours per week
  • Rotational holiday and weekend schedule
What are we looking for?Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the PCA assists in the care of patients experiencing a wide range of acute psychiatric conditions in the Emergency Department, following Nursing policies, procedures, and protocols, including:1. Patient Care: Provide direct care and support to patients of the Emergency Department Acute Psychiatry Service. Assist patients with age-appropriate care, including activities of daily living (ADLs), vital signs, phlebotomy, glucometry, electrocardiograms, and transportation.2. Safety Monitoring: Observe and report any changes in patients' mental status, behavior, or physical condition promptly to the team. Maintain constant vigilance to promote safety. Provide observation to patients at risk for harm to self or others, or elopement.3. Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care activities, observations, and any relevant information in the patient's medical record.4. Environmental Management: Contribute to maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment, active milieu monitoring while assigned to patient checks, particularly attuned to safety concerns. Assist in keeping patient rooms and common areas clean and free from safety concerns.5. De-escalation Support: Work closely with the multidisciplinary team in managing crisis situations and de-escalating potentially aggressive or agitated patients.6. Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with the interdisciplinary team, including nurses, mental health specialists, psychiatric providers, social workers, and other healthcare professionals, to ensure a holistic approach to patient care.What do we have to offer?

  • Demonstrated ability to solve basic patient and practice problems using a combination of strong interpersonal and communication skills, attention to detail and superior organizational skills.
  • Ability to lift and transport patients, using the appropriate physical technique, in a safe manner for the patient and self.
· Preferred: Must have recent experience, and/or training, in clinical patient care.· Required: Licensed, certified or enrolled student in a Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Mental Health Technician, or EMT accredited program, at the time of hire, OR Candidate enrolled in a Nursing program, Pre-Med or PA undergraduate program with at least one semester of patient care rotations completed at time of hire.
