
Heavy Equipment Mechanic

- Analyze malfunctions and repairs, rebuild and maintain construction equipment, such as cranes, scrapers, asphalt and concrete paving machines, motor graders, bulldozers, loaders, pump compressors and pneumatic tools
- Able to drive a one ton or larger vehicle with standard transmission.
- Operate and inspect machines or equipment to diagnose defects.
- Dismantle and reassemble equipment using hoists and hand tools.
- Replace defective engines and sub-assemblies such as transmissions.
- Weld broken parts and structural members.
- Must be able to read and comprehend repair manuals.
- Other related job functions may include, but not limited to:
- Examines parts for damage and/or excessive wear
- Using micrometers and gauges.
- Tests overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiently.
- May direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment.
- May perform incidental work items included within other crafts as well as related duties.
- This position typically is not an entry-level job, as it requires demonstrable previous experience as a Mechanic. A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred.
- Must be able to understand work directions and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees.
- Three (3) to Five (5) years or more of industry related experience is required for this position, with an emphasis on paving, roads, highways, and bridges.
- Preferred CDL class A driver’s license with a hazmat endorsement and satisfactory driving record.
- Heavy physical effort required.
- Ability to lift 0 to 50 pounds occasionally for hand work; Must be able to stand, bend, stretch for extended periods of time; ability to bend crouch and climb on and off the equipment repetitively; Use hands, arms and legs fully, acceptable vision (either naturally or with corrective lens).
- Continuous mental and visual attention required to complete tasks in efficient manner involving repetitive or diversified work requiring alertness of activity.
- Constant care necessary to prevent injury to others due to inherent hazards of construction work.
- Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.
- Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
- Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel and ready mixed concrete.
