- Assembles supplies and equipment for scheduled procedures according to physicians’ preference cards.
- Inspects all surgical equipment for proper functioning to maintain an environment of safety.
- Follows principles of aseptic technique and prescribed operating/procedure room procedures
- Adheres to aseptic technique when opening sterile packages and preparing for the procedure
- Reports observed or suspected breaks in sterile technique and takes action according to policy
- Applies their knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures and instruments to assist the Surgeon in surgical and diagnostic procedures.
- Washes and decontaminates all equipment, accessories and instruments per manufacturer guidelines.
- Maintains logs for processing equipment and instruments in accordance to the center’s board approved Infection Control guidelines and the manufacturer’s instructions for use.
- Maintains processors and autoclaves, performing daily checks and cultures and documenting in the appropriate records. Monitors cleaning solution daily for potency, and records results per policy.
- Ensures processing, packaging, sterilization and storage of items are conducted to maintain sterility of items.
- Ensures that all instruments and supplies are available as needed during procedures.
- Observes standard precautions.
- Assists Physician and RN with all surgeries/procedures, including patient positioning, preparation for procedure and specimen collection.
- Assists in all rescue and/or resuscitative efforts as deemed necessary by attending physician, anesthesia provider and/or Center Manager.
- Aids in explaining the procedure to patients if necessary and assists in psychologically preparing patients for procedures, communicating effectively with patients and families, as well as physicians and peers.
- Handles all specimens obtained during procedure, properly labeling, packaging and preparing for shipment.
- Works well within a team environment.
- Cleans and restocks procedure rooms and processing areas, ensuring that all equipment is stored properly.
- Maintains inventory of supplies, assisting in the receipt of incoming supplies.
- Assists with the transport and discharge of patients.
- Recognizes and utilizes safety precautions and procedures.
- Performs other duties as requested or assigned.
- Maintains certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology as per state-specific requirements.
- Participates in QAPI, Infection Control and Safety Program.
- Engages in various clerical and recordkeeping duties as needed.
- Demonstrated knowledge of potential exposure to hazardous materials (i.e. patient body fluids, disinfectant chemicals) and location of SDS sheets.
- Graduate of an accredited organization for Surgical Technologists and certified by the National Board of Surgical Technology preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with physicians and all medical professionals.
- Demonstrated knowledge of sterile processing.
- Previous healthcare experience in any capacity.
- Current certification of BLS.
