In this position, your main focus and responsibility will be maintaining and repairing our small engine equipment inventory, but you will also have the opportunity to diversify by providing maintenance service on fleet vehicles. Join us and be part of a team that is committed to excellence and innovation in every repair.Purpose of the Position:The purpose of this position is to be responsible for performing mechanical work to repair, maintain and rebuild gasoline and diesel-powered automobiles and small engine equipment.Minimum Education, Training and/or Experience (required at time of hire): High school diploma or GED, and a minimum of one (1) year of experience in the maintenance and repair of small engine equipment, gasoline and diesel automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment; must be 18 years of age or older at time of hire.Additional Training and Experience: Completion of routine safety training post hire.License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation: Possession of North Carolina valid driver’s license; North Carolina Inspection License; May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technicians as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the standard practices, tools, materials, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines and of the standard mechanical components of automotive, construction, and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the heating, welding, and cutting procedures used in rough repairs of vehicles, machines, and equipment.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of automotive, construction, and related equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose common defects in automotive, construction, and related equipment and to repair such defects with reasonable proficiency.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check.
In order to uphold internal pay parity and equity, salaries are non-negotiable for new and current Buncombe County employees.
