Department OverviewThe Advanced Practice Provider (APP) serving as the Blue Surgery (Hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB)/General Surgery) provider is a faculty member credentialed and privileged to serve as a licensed independent practitioner and is a member of the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Professional Staff practicing in accordance with the respective bylaws.The APP in this role will provide consistent high quality medical management to inpatients on the Blue Surgery team while on the acute care units. Role includes, but is not limited to: rounding on a daily basis with team and/or faculty, developing and implementing, in conjunction with faculty physicians, clinical plans of care and/or protocols for inpatients on these surgery services with common conditions/diagnoses/procedures; educating the house staff and nursing unit staff on these protocols, with the goal of enhancing quality of care, enhancing quality of patient services, and decreasing length of inpatient stay; working actively with hospital and unit staff to rapidly develop and implement discharge plans for inpatients and to address length of stay issues.Procedural duties include wound care (dressing changes, debridement), enteral tube placement and/or exchange, drain management, etc.The Blue Surgery APP shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university's missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach, and public service. The Blue Surgery APP is expected to comply with the scope of practice, other laws, regulations, OHSU policy, and other applicable professional standards of practice.The Blue Surgery APP delivers healthcare services to individuals within the scope of their license, provides advanced education to students, peers, and others; and may contribute to new knowledge and/or technology by conducting or participating in scholarship. Involvement in National/Local hepatobiliary, pancreatic and/or surgical organizations is highly encouraged.Hours: 10 hour shifts, 4x/week. No call. No nights. No weekends. Inpatient only.Function/Duties of PositionClinical Activities (not related to teaching or research): Assure the safe, efficient, high-quality quality and patient-centered management of care to patients , including but not limited to completing a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s status; developing, monitoring, and revising, as appropriate, an evidence-based treatment plan that addresses diagnoses, patterns of disease, risk factors, and treatment alternatives; treat many common acute and chronic health problems; interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe and manage medications and other therapies, provide health teaching with an emphasis on prevention of illness and health maintenance; and, refer patients to other healthcare professionals as necessary.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to diagnose and treat vascular surgery patients primarily in an inpatient environment.
Perform comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifying normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.
Write accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and admission and transfer orders.
Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and effectively communicate and document information.
Perform procedures beyond core duties as identified by the vascular surgery services, such as wound and drain management, and wound vacs.
Facilitate communication among patients, families, and staff to promote continuity of care across the healthcare continuum.
Evaluate quality outcomes for patients receiving care from this team by participating in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
Stay informed about current developments and trends in vascular surgery educational programs, in-services, professional associations, and current literature.
Develop expertise in coordinating and delivering care to patients on the vascular surgery service.
Collaborate with cross-department specialty care teams and primary care providers in providing consultative care for patients with vascular surgery needs.
Teaching/ Clinical Supervision: Support OHSU’s academic missions by participating in the design, development, and assessment of program curricula for professional (advanced practice nursing, medicine, and physician assistant) specialty areas; including course objectives, instructional methods, learning outcomes, projects, and assessment measures. Teach program courses as needed according to specified learning outcomes; academic advising and career related counseling for students; monitoring student retention and identifying and assisting at-risk students.
Deliver individual instruction to fellows, residents, and other clinical learners to support their personal program of learning in the applicable specialty area. Provide instruction and review of the practices, policies, and procedures in a variety of functions; including but not limited to development of treatment plans, interpretation of clinical diagnostic data; developing orders; patient and family communication and education; management of medical equipment, electronic medical records; performing procedures, and transitioning patients to the next level of care. Assures adherence to the specialty specific protocols, best practices, quality, and organizational indicators. Provides APP input to the residents’ performance as a provider in the clinical setting.
Administrative Activities/ Service:
Creating and maintaining patient care pathways and protocols. Creating order sets to reflect standard practice.
Required Qualifications
Master’s Degree or higher as required by specific Advanced Practice Provider role.
ACNP, AGACNP, PA-C
Demonstrated ability to satisfy standards of performance delineated by law and associated professional practice standards, the latter set forth as an addendum to the position description.
Ability to manage heavy workload with multiple priorities and inflexible deadlines.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Proficient in the use of computing hardware and software, including personal computing equipment, electronic medical record, word processing and spreadsheet software.
Regular and consistent attendance at work
Current licensure as required by specific Advanced Practice Provider governing board(s).
Current Board Certification, specialty specific

Prefer 3–5 years clinical experience as an APP that demonstrates ability to fulfill responsibilities for the specific role.
Quality improvement experience
Complex wound care
Experience in the Microsoft Office Suite of products.
Experience using Epic EMR (Electronic medical records)
