This individual is responsible for performing an extensive number of data collection functions, as delegated by the physician, to allow for proper diagnosis of the patient's condition; demonstrating comprehension of the ophthalmic technician skills, as out lined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO); and providing support to clinical staff of less advanced credentials. *Provider is willing to train technician*WHAT DOES FMC HAVE TO OFFER ITS EMPLOYEES?We offer a wide choice of compensation and benefit programs that are among the best. RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Communication & Patient Care
  • Acquaints all new patients with the office procedures to which they will be Informs patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how they will be affected during the tests.
  • Obtains patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.
  • Performs accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include:
  • Visual acuity
  • Manual lensometry
  • Confrontational visual fields
  • Stereo testing
  • Evaluation of motility
  • Pupillary function tests
  • Color plates
  • Applanation tonometry
  • Advanced refractometry
  • Retinoscopy
  • Angle assessment
  • Dilation of pupils
  • Contact lens evaluations
  • Visual field testing
  • Optic nerve scanning (i.e. OCT, HRT, GDx)
  • Pachymetry
  • Corneal topography
  • A Scan and B Scan
  • Ophthalmic imaging, including fluorescein angiography
  • Other tasks specific to the physician needs as a result of new technologies
  • Performs duties consistent with ophthalmic writer/scribe.
  • Assists physician with laser
  • Assists physician with minor surgery, maintaining practice standards of sterile technique and infection
Triage
  • Determines which patient should be taken next from the waiting room to have testing initiated. Escorts all patients from the waiting room for data collection. Following testing, advises as to who will see them next and make the patient comfortable during
  • Maintains a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required.
  • Provides telephone support regarding ocular emergencies, prescription refills and patient care
  • Communicates with reception and lead ophthalmic technician to facilitate proper patient flow.
Instrument Maintenance
  • Troubleshoots instruments as needed
  • Checks connections.
  • Performs archiving functions according to manufacturer
  • Reports any continued difficulty to lead ophthalmic technician.
Administrative
  • Audits clinical supply levels, communicating to lead ophthalmic technician which items fall below par
  • Confirms patients' appointments by phone two business days in advance.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Maintains an organized and clean work area
  • Participates in maintenance of clinical supplies
  • Assists with pulling charts and filing when workload permits
  • Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned

Job Qualifications:
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent
  • Strong customer service orientation

  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Ability to refract and perform other testing as needed
