The Health System encompasses Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital, Duke Primary Care, Duke Home and Hospice, Duke Health and Wellness, and multiple affiliations.Description of the Position:The Duke Center for Human Systems Immunology is seeking a detail-oriented scientist to fulfill a key role as Research Technician II to assist with laboratory operations in support of assays to assess the antibody response to vaccination in clinical trials. The main goal of this position is to accurately perform bead coupling/conjugation procedures and to keep track of associated inventory to provide a stable, high quality, and accurate supply of reagents needed for conduction of immune monitoring assays. This candidate must be very organized, possess excellent communication skills, have a high level of technical precision, be interested in maintaining accurate reagent inventories in a Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) environment, enjoy working in a fast-paced lab environment with multiple priorities, and be able to work well as part of a team.Job Functions & Responsibilities:Perform and develop methods for bead coupling and bead conjugations. Coordinate with lab members for goals and planning each week. Work toward improving coupling procedures and best practices.Manage protein and peptide inventory. Keep an accurate antigen inventory in terms of antigen name (received and reporting name), amount of each antigen, and aliquot antigens as necessary to avoid multiple freeze thaws. Communicate with study managers and lab operations team in a proactive manner to ensure antigens and coupled beads are kept at adequate levels to meet study timelines. Coordinate coupling and testing of new antigen lots.Perform GCLP-related tasks as needed in the lab such as reagent receipt and completing related QC documentation, laboratory maintenance, and assisting with preparation for audits. Assist with creation and editing of templates for the electronic lab notebook, writing/revising standard operating procedures, and evaluating laboratory information systems when needed.Become trained on hazardous materials shipment procedures. Assist with sample and reagent shipments between lab sites at Duke and to collaborators outside of Duke. Create aliquots of monoclonal antibodies when requested by lab members.Assist the laboratory and project managers by contributing to the overall effort to streamline the workload, improve the efficiency of the laboratory, and contribute to the daily laboratory effort to adhere to GCLP guidelines.Maintain laboratory and associated equipment in a clean, well-ordered, and functional manner. Keep supplies on hand with a well-planned inventory and ordering system.Maintain laboratory notebook in an orderly fashion for tracking experiments and results. Provide written updates of work each week. Carefully and accurately document assay conditions, results, and quality control findings and report them promptly to meet deadlines.Perform other related laboratory duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator.Education, Skills, & Experience Requirements:Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in biology or other related scientific field.Strong background in laboratory techniques with technical precision, experience working in a GxP or regulatory environment is a plus.Must be able to manage multiple and rapidly changing priorities and have the ability to quickly learn new skills.Must be detail-oriented and well organized with strong communication skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced interactive team environment.Knowledge of basic mathematical, data collection and research principles normally acquired through education and training.Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.Minimum QualificationsEducationWork generally requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.ExperienceNone required above education/training requirement.
