Responsibilities:
- Clinical and Scientific Leadership * Stays current with and contributes to best practices in diagnostic hematology with emphasis on thrombosis, bleeding and platelet function and immunology. * Provides technical and scientific leadership to a diverse team of clinical laboratory technologists to ensure the highest levels of patient care and regulatory compliance. * Under direction/delegation of senior laboratory directors and medical directors provides clinical consultation for test results, serving as an expert resource to our clients. * Participates in clinical research, protocol development, and introduction of new technologies to keep the lab and its customers at the cutting edge of the field. * Identifies new technologies and/or tests that will add value to customers and patients, and manages their development, validation, and operational implementation. * Publishes and presents at the national level to contribute to scientific knowledge and to reflect the expertise and innovation of Versiti. * Ensures own ongoing professional development through publications, presentations, and professional meetings. * Actively engages and collaborates with collaborators both internally (BRI, MCW) and externally (industry partners). * Maintains professional certifications.
- Laboratory Operations * Functions as a productive member of the laboratory leadership and director teams. Participates in rotation for review and sign out of test results and closes out Customer Relationship Management (CRM) events as assigned. * Identifies and champions the implementation of laboratory improvements that create customer value and efficiencies. * Provides strategic direction and oversight to ensure compliance/service excellence/innovation/cost effectiveness in the lab. * Identifies and evaluates the latest technologies and methodologies, and the development of innovative ideas for incorporation into operations. * Helps ensure that new tests can be sustained from a training/competency/operational perspective. * Demonstrates partnership and collaboration with operational management through participation and discussion, and alignment with organizational/team goals and decisions. * Partners effectively with the Product Development (PD) program; provides leadership to PD within the lab. * Serves as a technical resource to the laboratories for problem solving and process improvement. * Coordinates Laboratory Director coverage with Operations Director to ensure our patients are served appropriately.
- Supervision and Leadership * Assists with drafting job descriptions and performance standards for current for positions in the laboratory. * Provides leadership, mentoring, coaching, and guidance to laboratory team. * Monitors and documents performance of any direct reports, sets goals in accordance with organizational priorities, and coaches staff to improve performance. * Maintains compliance with employment laws and Versiti Human Resources policies.
- Human Resource Management * Supports and promotes a culture of open, productive communication and responsibility in the laboratories. * Promotes effective human resource management to include coaching/feedback, recognition, performance evaluation, hiring, discipline, and termination in collaboration with the Senior Laboratory Director, Human Resources and in compliance with Versiti policy. * Accountable for human resource management for any direct reports. * Responsible for staff development and mentoring in science, technology and leadership, to include goal setting, ongoing learning, and development of personal and departmental performance standards to meet business unit initiatives.
- Regulatory Responsibility * Responsible for performing laboratory director and technical supervisor responsibilities per Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) ’88 regulations and as delegated per the Senior Laboratory Director. * Promotes and maintains compliance of laboratory operations with all applicable standards and regulations; ensures that regulatory changes are incorporated into laboratory standards and policy. Leads by example by operating within the quality management systems (QMS) and promotes importance of this cross functional partnership. * Participates in developing and executing quality systems for laboratory operations and ensures that QC (quality control) and safety procedures are managed effectively. * Participates in and helps oversee proficiency program and laboratory staff competency programs; assures successful participation in proficiency testing. * Develops and maintains working knowledge of College of American Pathologists (CAP) and CLIA regulations, and laboratory quality systems.
- Product Development and New Test Implementation * Identifies, evaluates, and implements opportunities for new or improved laboratory tests. * Interacts with lab directors and other scientists both internal and external to author and publish development work. * Serves as an expert resource for contract research projects. * Helps ensure that validation, SOPs and training have been completed before implementing a test in the laboratory. * Monitors performance of newly introduced tests and methods. Initiates action when inconsistencies or problems are identified.
- Leadership * Participates as an effective member of the DL management team and the Versiti management team. * Communicates effectively with staff, management, and customers. * Manages change constructively.
- Customer Service * Develops and maintains relationships with customers; communicates customer needs and issues to laboratory operations, and ensures they are addressed. * Provides expert consultation and interpretation of test results to customers in a timely manner; including communicating to the customer about changes in technology or knowledge relative to their activities. * Participates as required in the review of customer satisfaction surveys, and the development of effective customer service strategies and process improvements designed to meet and/or exceed customer requirements, as well as the training needed to promote and assure high satisfaction. * Promotes interdepartmental cooperation and respect through effective communication and problem solving. * Provides educational lectures locally and nationally on request.
- Continuous Improvement Culture * Supports implementation of Lean/Six Sigma methodology in laboratories. * Champions continuous improvement to create customer value more efficiently and effectively.
- Financial Management * Contributes to creative ways to achieve laboratory growth targets and business objectives. * Partners with Finance and operational management to assure department activities are conducted within the established budget. * Evaluates, qualifies and recommends suppliers for equipment, software, and/or reagent purchasing.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification
- Understands and performs in accordance with all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements
- Complies with all standard operating policies and procedures
- PhD in relevant science – immunology, biology, biochemistry required
- 1-3 years Experience working in a clinical laboratory setting including training and/or experience in high complexity testing for the specialty required
- 1-3 years Demonstrated experience in writing and publishing scientific articles required
- 1-3 years Experience in development and implementation of new assays. required
- 1-3 years post-doctoral training in hematology-related field. preferred
- Demonstrated expertise in diagnostic hematology related to relevant disease states (bleeding,clotting, platelet function, etc.). preferred
- Ability to communicate a vision and implement strategies to achieve it. required
