SOUTHFIELD, MICHIGANReporting to the Engineering Manager of North America Seating Structures SME group, the Senior Weld Engineer will be responsible for reviewing and assessing weld joint designs for DFM/DFA, provide technical guidance for welding, lead continuous improvement projects, and support operations.Establish welding procedures and specifications for new and current programs. Working across global regions with close collaboration between Product Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and Operations groups.The Role:Your work will include, but not be limited to:
- Provide key input for weld joint designs, materials, and welding process for new programs.
- Attend design reviews on new programs.
- Review and assessing welding designs for DFM/DFA prior to design release and tool kick-off.
- Write guidelines, procedures, and templates for weld design, quality checks, and manufacturing.
- Create welding and joining design guidelines.
- Apply design calculations for weld joint design and applications.
- Lead continuous improvement and efficiency projects for welding and joining processes.
- Interact with design and manufacturing groups in global regions to provide technical support for welding processes.
- Assist plants with welding issues using root cause problem-solving analysis.
- Understanding customer welding and testing specifications and how they apply to Seating.
- Support prototype builds for welding setup, quality validation process, and document lessons learned.
- Assist Manufacturing group with tool design reviews and welding parameter development at tool integrator.
- Support new program launches.
- Perform CQI-15 weld audits at manufacturing facilities.
- Review and analyze test data from materials lab testing (cut and etch, chemical composition, micro-hardness, strength testing, etc.).
- Perform weld trials in a weld lab to evaluate weld equipment, new technologies, materials, and product designs.
- 30% Meetings with peers supporting new and current programs.
- 25% Work on continuous improvement or innovation projects.
- 45% Review and assessing products designs for welding feasibility.
- Bachelor of Science in Weld Engineering Technology or equivalent.
- 13+ years' work experience with GMAW, LBW, RSW, and RPW welding processes.
- Root cause diagnosis and problem-solving skills.
- Strong technical, computer, writing, and communication skills.
- Proficient with Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word.
- Willing to travel.
- Manufacturing experience
- “Hands on” welding experience or CWI (Certified Weld Inspector)
- Metallurgical knowledge or experience
- Knowledge of GD&T
- CAD experience
