DescriptionUnder supervision, to perform semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of Emergency Medical Services equipment, including the procurement of emergency services equipment, provisions, and supplies on a routine basis and under multiple, simultaneous emergency conditions (e.g., fire, flood, earthquake, and other disasters).Typical TasksThe following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
  • Monitors emergency response vehicles, generators, equipment trailers, and equipment throughout the county and identifies needed repairs or maintenance;
  • Performs minor repairs for EMS equipment;
  • Monitors and maintains a variety of equipment, such as satellite phones, portable and mobile radios, and response vehicle equipment;
  • Initiates requests for maintenance and repair work and purchase orders to acquire machinery, tools, and materials;
  • Operates and drives emergency response vehicles, disaster medical supply unit, and other equipment;
  • Reviews department inventory to ensure reasonable inventory limits and replacement parts in facilities, emergency trailers, and response vehicles;
  • Researches and provides recommendations, or with approval, purchases tools, supplies, equipment, and parts from a variety of sources;
  • Receives goods from vendors and checks for proper quality, quantity, condition, and price;
  • Picks up parts from vendors; repairs and refurbishes equipment and peripherals from available parts;
  • Reviews, updates, and maintains accurate information related to materials, parts, supplies, and related items in an inventory database system;
  • Develops written procedures for facility-related functions;
  • Maintains hardware and software inventory;
  • Provides training to users and other technical staff and advises on best practices;
  • Keeps simple records and prepares simple reports;
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW), as required*;
  • Performs other related duties, as required.
Employment StandardsSufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the ability to perform the above tasks, plus the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalent;andThree (3) years of full-time experience in equipment support work within an emergency medical services and/or public safety setting, which must include experience in materials and supply logistics.Possession of an EMT certification can substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver's authorization.
  • EMT certificate is preferred.
  • Must complete Emergency Vehicle Operators/Operations Course (EVOC) within six (6) months of appointment;
  • *As a condition of employment, pursuant to California Government Code Sections 3100-3109 and Local Ordinance, all County of Santa Clara employees are designated Disaster Service Workers (DSWs), including extra help. A DSW is required to complete all assigned DSW-related training, and in the event of an emergency, return to work as ordered.
Knowledge of:
  • Equipment and practices used in installing, maintaining, and repairing inter-communication systems;
  • General principles and practices of local and regional emergency communications systems;
  • Various procurement methods to purchase supplies or services for the Emergency Medical Services Department;
  • Stock control systems, both manual and computerized;
  • Inventory methods and procedures for receiving and issuing materials and goods;
  • General medical terminology;
  • Common computer systems and applications.
Ability to:
  • Learn to diagnose problems and adjust and make repairs to a variety of radio and other related electronic communications equipment;
  • Troubleshoot technical problems and identify alternative technical solutions;
  • Drive EMS vehicles;
  • Use a variety of hand tools to install, maintain, repair, modify, and operate electronic equipment;
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports of work in progress or completed;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, at all levels, including colleagues, the public, and representatives of other agencies.
