Adaptec Solutions is a top-ten, North American integration partner engineering diverse material handling and automation solutions with lifecycle service support for manufacturing, distribution, and warehousing companies.JOB SUMMARY:The Lead Project Engineer – Controls Systems is a senior level role responsible for architecting and leading the design, debug, and commissioning of high quality electrical and controls systems for custom industrial automation projects. The successful candidate will review solution concepts developed by the sales and applications teams and transform them into a detailed controls and electrical project plan with discrete tasks and estimated hours. They will assign work to the controls and electrical engineering teams, mentor and provide technical guidance, verify new designs and processes, and directly develop documentation and schematics using AutoCAD Electrical. Primary control platforms include Allen Bradley PLCs (RSLogix/Studio 5000 and Kinetix motion), with Siemens experience considered a plus. This position reports directly to the Director of Engineering and is 100 % on site in either Rochester, NY or Painted Post, NY.JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:Solutions Architect
  • Collaborate with cross disciplinary teams (sales, applications, mechanical, controls, electrical, software, purchasing and project management) to develop integrated automation solutions that meet customer requirements.
  • Review customer documentation and internal quotes to develop controls and electrical design concepts.
  • Break down high level concepts into discrete tasks and estimate hours required to complete them, creating a project plan for controls and electrical engineering activities. Assign tasks to controls and electrical engineering resources based on capability and workload; monitor progress and adjust assignments as needed.
  • Work closely with the project manager and customer from quote preparation through project runoff to ensure deliverables meet schedule, budget and quality objectives.
  • Participate in system risk assessments and design reviews; identify and mitigate technical risks.
  • Coordinate with vendors to obtain quotes and review specifications for electrical subassemblies and controls hardware.
  • Develop and maintain company standards and processes for controls architecture, electrical design and programming best practices.
  • Evaluate project feasibility, including performing time studies and preliminary calculations.
  • Mentor and develop Controls Engineers; provide coaching, feedback and training.
  • Support organizational growth and perform other duties as assigned.
System Design Engineer
  • Design and document electrical power distribution, control panels, I/O layouts and wiring diagrams using AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Develop PLC, HMI and motion control architectures and programming standards, primarily using Allen Bradley platforms (RSLogix 5/500/5000, Studio 5000, Kinetix and FactoryTalk View); Siemens Step 7/TIA Portal experience is a plus.
  • Perform engineering analyses and calculations to size electrical components, servo motors and drives in adherence to client specifications and applicable industry standards.
  • Research components and work with vendors to obtain quotes, lead times and technical specifications for PLCs, drives, sensors, vision systems and safety devices.
  • Assist build and installation teams during panel fabrication, system wiring and commissioning; support PLC and robot programmers during system startup/debug.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies in controls, robotics, SCADA and IoT, and apply them where appropriate.
  • Ability to travel < 30% to customer locations and Adaptec's sister location (Rochester or Painted Post).
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPEREINCE:
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum 5 years of controls engineering experience in custom industrial automation; experience programming robotic work cells, PLC, HMI, and material handling systems.
  • Hands on automation system debug and commissioning experience preferred.
SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS NECESSARY TO PERFORM THE JOB:
  • Experience in engineered to order automation equipment and systems including PLCs, robotics, conveyors, AMR and ASRS systems.
  • Proficiency in Rockwell RSLogix/Studio 5000, Kinetix servo systems and FactoryTalk View; knowledge of Siemens Step 7/TIA, WinCC, structured text programming languages and SCADA systems is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical and familiarity with other controls software such as Wonderware, Ignition or similar.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills; able to make data driven decisions.
  • Subject matter expert in engineering best practices, automation design, equipment selection and manufacturing processes.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; able to provide timely feedback and hold team members accountable for achieving results.
  • High degree of professionalism, attention to detail, and organizational skills; self starter capable of working with minimal supervision.

  • Ownership and initiative in driving the controls design from concept through commissioning.

  • Development and maintenance of engineering standard operating procedures to ensure consistent and efficient operations.

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the wage range for this role is $120,000 - 140,000. The rate range provided is a general guideline.
