The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

Purpose of Position

In this role, we will define/develop optical thin film coatings and manufacturing processes that build from the foundations of Corning’s existing designs and processes.

Day to Day Responsibilities:
  • Manage thin film design and recipe portfolio.
  • Convert optical requirements into thin film designs.
  • Design manufacturing processes using existing production assets and current fundamental understanding to produce thin film designs.
  • Specify metrology methods to characterize thin film designs and manufacturing performance.
  • Specify cleaning, material handling and storage procedures within the thin film coating process flow.
  • Partner with mechanical design to develop prototype and production tooling.
  • Lead fundamental process understanding projects to further thin film capability.
  • Integrate Design for Manufacturing (DF/X) methodology into thin film product and process designs.
  • Transfer knowledge of new thin film designs and processes to manufacturing.
  • Coordinate IP management with the division IP portfolio manager by utilizing internal “R-reports”, invention disclosures and patents.
Travel Requirements:

We anticipate 10% travel for this role. Typical travel includes training, networking opportunities, customer visits, and benchmarking activities as required.

Hours of work:

Typical first shift production hours, M-F, 8am-5pm. Extra and off hours may be required during times of heightened project activity.

Required Education:
  • We require a minimum of a 4-yr technical degree with the following order of preference: Optical science/engineering; Physics; Material science; Chemical engineering.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of UV optical thin film design experience
Required Skills:
  • Critical thinking to rapidly solve problems
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Desire to solve problems by leveraging Statistical/6-Sigma/DOE and Hypothesis Tree problem solving methodologies.
  • Confidence in interaction with all levels of the organization (Production techs to Sr. Leadership)
  • Ability to function on a product development team of multi-disciplinary engineers.
