- Maintains continuing education and seeks ongoing education to improve job performance. Maintains credentials as required for job classification.
- Conducts and coordinates coding quality reviews and other reviews, including rebuttal process and one-to one discussions with coders, providing educational resources when necessary. May perform ongoing coding reviews of coders with less-than-optimal coding quality and provide ongoing feedback until accuracy is attained. Conducts ad hoc coding reviews on an ongoing basis.
- Performs coding reviews to help determine and validate documentation and coding issues and gaps; analyzes coding review results and identifies patterns, trends, and variations in coding and documentation practices; and makes recommendations for improvement.
- Consistently meets or exceeds established Quality & Productivity standards as defined by policies.
- Provides input to the organization's coding education program to include national and industry coding standards.
- Reviews medical record documentation to identify diagnoses and procedures. Assigns correct diagnostic, procedural codes, and appropriate modifiers using standard guidelines and automated encoding software maintaining departmental accuracy standards.
- Exhibits knowledge of the Solventum system and other work-related equipment and/or software.
- Serves as a resident expert on coding and assists coding associates with resolving coding questions and provides mentoring.
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Associate degree or Bachelor's degree in coding related degree preferred
- Courses in Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT-4 required
- 3-4 years Outpatient and/or Inpatient coding experience. Experience with clinical information systems (Solventum grouper, electronical medical records, computer assisted coding) required
- 1-2 years Auditing experience preferred
- CCS-Certified Coding Specialist or Certified Outpatient Coder - COC required
- RHIT - Registered Health Information Technician and Registered Health Information Administrator preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent computer skills required
- Clinical system software skills (e.g. Solventum, electronic medical record).
- Strong knowledge of Outpatient Payment and regulatory systems
- Strong knowledge of MS-DRG and APR-DRG payment groupers
- Strong analytical and organizational skills
