Position OverviewThe Automotive Technician is responsible for performing intermediate-advanced level diagnostic and repair tasks on a variety of vehicles. This role involves identifying mechanical issues, performing routine maintenance, and conducting repairs under the guidance of senior technicians or shop foreman. The Technician is expected to have a solid understanding of automotive systems and repair techniques, and demonstrate the ability to work independently while occasionally assisting or mentoring less experienced technicians.Key ResponsibilitiesDiagnostics and Troubleshooting:
  • Perform diagnostic tests to identify vehicle issues using computerized diagnostic equipment and other tools.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems, determining the root cause of malfunctions.
Repairs and Maintenance:
  • Conduct intermediate-advanced level repairs on engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension systems, and other vehicle components.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and fluid replacements.
  • Replace and repair parts as needed, ensuring all work is performed to industry standards.
Technical Proficiency:
  • Use technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and other resources to aid in repairs and diagnostics.
  • Stay updated on the latest automotive technologies and repair techniques through ongoing training and professional development.
Quality Assurance:
  • Conduct thorough inspections of vehicles before and after repairs to ensure all work meets quality standards.
  • Test drive vehicles to verify proper operation and identify any remaining issues.
Collaboration and Communication:
  • Work closely with service advisors to understand customer concerns and provide accurate repair estimates.
  • Communicate effectively with other technicians and shop staff to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality service.
  • Mentor and assist less experienced technicians as needed.
Tool and Equipment Maintenance:
  • Maintain and organize personal and shop tools and equipment.
  • Ensure all tools and equipment are in good working condition and report any issues to management.
Safety and Compliance:
  • Follow all safety protocols and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Comply with local, state, and federal regulations regarding vehicle repairs and environmental standards.
  • Properly dispose of hazardous materials according to regulations.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training or certification in automotive repair is preferred.
  • 2-4 years of experience as an automotive technician or in a related role.
  • Strong knowledge of automotive systems and intermediate-level repair techniques.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic equipment, tools, and software.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • ASE certification or willingness to obtain ASE certification is preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry parts and equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
  • Ability to work in a shop environment, which may involve exposure to loud noises, dust, and fumes.
Work Environment
  • Primarily in an automotive repair shop environment.
  • May involve occasional exposure to extreme temperatures, depending on the season and shop conditions.
