Description :Job Summary
Responsible for the overall operations and functioning of the Safety and Security Department in providing service, support, protection and assistance with the standard of care to the hospital community by safeguarding and securing the hospital; its facilities and property. As assigned, supervises security personnel; develops work assignments; oversees shift operations; provides feedback and monitors/directs security, parking, communications center, and guest shuttle activities. Interprets and enforces department policies and procedure and serves as liaison for police and fire authorities.
Supports, and is responsible for incorporating into job performance, the Frederick Health (FH) mission, vision, core values and customer service philosophy and adheres to the FH Compliance Program, including following all regulatory requirements and the FH Standards of Behavior.Example of Essential Functions:
  • Manages violent and aggressive behavior or any misconduct by patients, visitors or staff. Leads and directs activity during emergency situations. Maintains order and enacts corrective measures during internal/external disasters.
  • Readies the helicopter landing area.
  • Escorts medical personnel to patient location.
  • Provides support for patient transports.
  • Secures helicopter-landing area.
  • Demonstrates diplomatic relations and service-oriented skills.
  • Conducts escorts.
  • Provides assistance with disabled and locked vehicles.
  • Controls access and egress.
  • Secures patient’s medication, valuables and belongings, as requested.
  • Provides direction, support and assistance to staff members for daily functions of Security department. Reviews paperwork, ie, incident reports, accident reports, etc. Maintains accurate record of incidents and investigates complaints, as necessary.
  • Enforces the restrictions assigned to loading dock area, fire lane, no parking area, handicap parking, and physician parking.
  • Monitors and maintains control of emergency vehicle access.
  • Monitors CCTV system, Access Control System, IVIS Badging System, Emergency/ Information Intercom System and FRED system, as needed.
  • Performs maintenance operation of Panic Alarms.
  • Performs Safety Inspections.
  • Investigates security incidents, conducts interviews and reviews surveillance information, as needed/requested.
  • Compiles evidence and completes reports/documents of findings.
  • Assists local law enforcement.
  • Testifies in court, as required.
  • Responsible for scheduling of assigned shift(s) to ensure staffing needs are being met while assisting staff members with scheduling needs.
  • Monitors, documents, evaluates and provides feedback to Security Supervisor related to the job performance of Security Officers.
  • Provides leadership and direction to Security Officers. Assists with training initiatives, performance improvement activities and special assignments to improve the quality of the Security operations.
  • Patrols all areas of the FMH campus, as well as, offsite facilities, as required, to ensure a safe and secure environment and adherence to policy.
  • Provides high visibility to deter theft, vandalism and improper conduct.
  • Responsible for overall training schedule assignments for new hires. Provides process improvement ideas and researches feasibility of resolutions.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of safety and customer related operations preferred
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills and techniques and the ability to take initiative and give direction as situations dictate.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills to assist with control desk operation.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Possesses ability to provide direction and management of security officer performance, routine operations and functions of security department.
  • Ability to take control of volatile situations and issue commands as situation’s dictate.
Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Required:
  • Minimum of a high school diploma required.
  • Maryland State Police (MSP) Security Guard Card certification preferred or
  • Must be able to Obtain Maryland Guard Card. If the applicant is hired without a guard card, he/she will be required to work as a Front Desk Greeter until the guard card application has been submitted.
  • No experience required, but 1-3 years of security or related experience preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Maryland driver’s license or valid license from the state in which the employee resides.
  • Must submit to and pass a criminal background check.
  • Must obtain within the first 6 months and maintain throughout employment:

  • Must obtain within first 90 days of employment and maintain throughout employment:
  • International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS) Basic Officer Certification
  • CPR
  • Musty demonstrate proper use of equipment and supplies according to established procedures within the first 90 days.
  • Communicates by radio in a clear, concise and professional manner
  • Demonstrates proper use of Security vehicle to supplement routine duties or special requests
  • Understands and uses computer equipment, maintaining confidentiality of information and password
  • Demonstrates proper use of patient restraint equipment.
  • Adheres to department/hospital policies and procedures in performing duties and assignments
  • Understands and informs others of hospital fire safety procedures
  • Always wears appropriate protective equipment during interaction with patients
  • Washes hands after every patient interaction
  • Adheres to all safety-related and Security Department policies
  • In the first 6 months demonstrate the ability to deal with, and effectively deescalate, anxious/stressed people and manage aggression; Effectively manage a high volume of activity.
