Position Overview:The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is seeking a skilled and motivated Senior Maintenance Laborer - Traffic to join our Parking Shop team. In this role, you'll help lead field operations supporting the installation, maintenance, and removal of paid parking infrastructure, traffic signs, curb painting, and graffiti abatement across SDOT's managed curb spaces. As part of the Transit and Mobility Division, you'll be directly contributing to SDOT's goals of safety, accessibility, and public space management. Your leadership will support a small crew in maintaining a reliable, equitable, and efficient parking system that serves the people who live in, work in, and visit Seattle. This position reports to the Parking Shop Crew Chief.Job Responsibilities
  • Install and repair traffic and parking signs while ensuring compliance with city regulations and work orders.
  • Install and remove parking pay stations as part of ongoing parking management and infrastructure updates, ensuring proper placement and functionality.
  • Lead a crew of workers during complex maintenance activities, assigning tasks, managing work schedules, and ensuring safety standards are adhered to on-site.
  • Evaluate and determine materials and equipment required for various tasks, ensuring that the proper tools and resources are available to complete projects.
  • Apply and maintain curb paint for load zones, bus zones, and other designated areas, ensuring clear visibility and adherence to traffic regulations.
  • Set up temporary or emergency traffic signs for special events, street closures, and emergencies, ensuring the safe rerouting of traffic under strict timelines.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:Experience: Two years of experience in general labor/manual work involving the installation, repair, removal, and maintenance of non-electrical traffic control devices, including curb painting for load zones and bus zones.OR: A combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or can describe comparable experience:
  • Experience leading a crew in maintenance tasks related to traffic control devices, including assigning duties, managing work schedules, and ensuring safety standards.
  • Certification in First Aid/CPR and flagging, ensuring safety protocols are followed in high-traffic and hazardous work environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide clear instructions to crew members and effectively communicate with the public and other city departments during projects.
Other Requirements:
  • Completion of a background check may be required for this position.
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites.
  • May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
Licenses:
  • Current Washington State Drivers license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
