- Create and maintain performance and lifetime models of lithium-ion cell behavior.
- Develop experiments to parametrize and validate models. Analyze resulting data.
- Develop on-board real-time algorithms that involve cell behavior: state-of-charge, state-of-health, power limits, temperature estimation, etc. Work with BMS engineers to implement algorithms.
- Devise cell level and pack level experiments to parameterize and validate algorithm performance.
- Develop battery pack simulation model using Simulink to facilitate powertrain integration and evaluate pack performance. Use model to investigate faults in the field and lab.
- Interface with vehicle teams and external OEM partners to develop and refine algorithms.
- Analyze algorithm performance from real world vehicle data and use learnings to propose algorithm/model improvements.
- Investigate the use of physics-based models and machine learning to build better algorithms and models.

- This position will be part of the Systems Engineering team that supports Proterra’s Manufacturing and Engineering operations.
- You will report to the Cell Engineering Manager and collaborate with other Engineering team members located at our headquarters in Burlingame, CA and manufacturing facilities in Greer, SC.

- 5+ years of work experience in at least one of the following: controls engineering, state estimation, battery modeling, or battery algorithms.
- BS/MS/PhD in a related field.
- Familiarity with basic electrochemistry and lithium-ion cell behavior.
- Proficient with MATLAB/Simulink.
- Proficient with dynamic modeling, Kalman filtering, and state estimator design.
- Experience in writing code to analyze large data sets.
- Experience with requirement management (JAMA, Doors, etc).
- Experience with cell modeling (equivalent circuit and/or electrochemical).
