Job SummaryThe Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice registered nurse who serves as a nurse expert in a specialty population or clinical condition nursing, leader, consultant, educator, and mentor for the nursing staff and teams at UCSF Medical Center. The specialized knowledge and advanced skills required for this role include clinical expertise in the management of the specialty population/clinical condition and related nursing care; design and implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP); education and mentorship; consultation; performance improvement; and team leadership. The role has three spheres of impact across the health system's adult services that include the patient/family, nursing/interprofessional teams, and the organization/health system. This role works collaboratively with the clinical and administrative teams to support and ensure high quality standards of nursing care and professional practice to optimize patient, team, and system outcomes.Involves specialty knowledge and advanced clinical expertise in assessment, diagnosis, and intervention to prevent, remediate, or alleviate illness and promote health with a defined specialty patient population, such as oncology, pediatrics, geriatrics, psychiatric / behavioral health, adult health, acute / critical care, pain management, among others. Provides direct patient care including assessment, diagnosis, and management, leadership for systems improvements, teaching, mentoring, consulting, utilization of evidence-based practice including implementation and research appraisal skills, and team leadership and management. Impacts outcomes by providing expert consultation to patients/families, nurses and interdisciplinary team colleagues, and to the organization/health system including leading implementation of improvements in clinical care and health care delivery systems.The Neonatal Cardiac Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is responsible for planning and provision of nursing care for neonates requiring cardiac nursing care in UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital (BCH). Primary areas of oversight will be the Pediatric Cardiac Transitional Care Unit and the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. However, the CNS will provide patient consultation and will support the standard of care for cardiac patients throughout BCH. The CNS will be responsible for the development and maintenance of a standardized and comprehensive program for the nursing care of neonates requiring cardiac nursing care and will oversee the implementation of this program. This will be done in consultation and collaboration with the nursing staff, pediatric intensivists, cardiothoracic surgery, and cardiology teams. The CNS will assess and identify the educational needs of the nursing and medical staff and will collaborate with the unit managers, Institute of Nursing Excellence to meet these needs, and physician leadership to meet these needs. The CNS will document face-to-face encounters with clinical notes in the medical record. The CNS will work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team that includes nurses, physicians, administrative staff, as well as allied health professionals within the hospital and the community to provide consistent care to each patient/family.   • A minimum of three years of recent clinical RN or NP experience in the specialty area
  • Master's degree from an accredited Nursing Program
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of California
  • Current CNS License in the State of California (CA BRN) within one year of hire
  • Current American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • Current American Heart Association ACLS Certification
  • Clinical Nurse Specialist or APRN specialty certification (e.g. CCNS-P or PCNS-BC) obtained within one year of hire
  • In-depth knowledge of one or more clinical specialty areas, to include diagnoses, treatments, standards of practice and patient / family educational consulting and resources.
  • Advanced knowledge of methodology for conducting evidence-based research, data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess highly-complex issues and develop multiple options for resolution.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide education, training, and direction to nursing staff, and to develop positive working relationships with patients, families, employees, and outside agencies as required. Advanced skills in written and verbal communications, with the ability to convey complex and / or sensitive information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Doctorate degree (PhD or DNP) from an accredited Nursing program
License/Certification
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of California
