We are seeking a Pastry Sous Chef to help lead our pastry department with innovation, precision, and dedication.Position OverviewThe Pastry Sous Chef works closely with and reports directly to the Executive Pastry Chef, while also serving as the point of leadership for the pastry department in their absence. This is a hands-on leadership role, blending production responsibilities with staff supervision, recipe development, and operational management.You will assist in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the pastry department, ensuring high-quality production, consistency, and creativity across all menu items. This role also involves staff development, recipe testing, inventory management, and contributing to the continued innovation that Catering by Michaels is known for.Key ResponsibilitiesDaily tasks include, but are not limited to:Overseeing daily pastry production and quality controlReviewing, scaling, and preparing recipes for productionParticipating in pastry production when neededResearching and developing new products, menus, and recipesAssisting with labor management, scheduling, and staff supervisionTraining and mentoring pastry team members for growth and developmentAddressing staff concerns in the absence of the Executive Pastry ChefMaintaining compliance with all company policies and proceduresAttending weekly Banquet Event Order (BEO) meetingsManaging daily inventory and communicating purchasing needsAssisting with quarterly inventoriesSupporting execution at events offsite, participating in holidays, and peak business periods as requiredEnsuring strict adherence to sanitation, safety, and cleanliness standardsWhat We're Looking For3+ years of progressive culinary experience in pastry, ideally in catering, hotels, or fine diningA proven leader with the ability to inspire, teach, and motivate a teamExcellent attention to detail and a strong sense of organizationHands-on management style with willingness to step into production as neededWorking knowledge of Spanish required; fluency preferredStrong ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume kitchen environmentFlexible availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidaysSchedule & ExpectationsFull-time role: 50 hours per week, based on business needsFlexibility required during peak event seasons, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays as needed based on business needsBenefits & PerksAs a full-time employee of Catering by Michaels, you will be eligible for a comprehensive benefits package, including:Paid Vacation Time401(k) with company matchHealth, dental, and vision insuranceGrowth opportunities within a creative, supportive work environmentEmployee meals & catering discountsOpportunities to be part of some of Chicago's most exciting eventsWhy Work With UsAt Catering by Michaels, we don't just make food - we create experiences.
