POSITION DESCRIPTIONJob Title: Layout Party ChiefJob Summary:Provides quality surveying services for company to ensure construction work complies with design drawings and specifications. Manages assigned survey personnel. Ensures compliance with company standards and best practices for all survey related activities; e.g. job set-up, data management, quality control, safety and other related areas as needed. This position works closely with the Senior Layout Party Chief to coordinate job set up and accurate documentation of survey data. A Layout Party Chief may be required to perform the duties of a Layout Technician as required by the Senior Layout Manager.Primary Duties and Responsibilities: * Performs all phases of the survey work on multiple construction jobsites.
  • Coordinate work with job site Superintendents, Foreman, and other Party Chiefs in order to complete work assignments.
  • Trains and mentors Layout Technicians.
  • Uses multiple survey instruments to perform layout duties (Total Station [Topcon], GPS, Spinning Laser, Level, Data Collector, etc.).
  • Maintains proper documentation in field notebook.
  • Checks measurements and computations made by office personnel and Layout Technicians.
  • Maintains “As-Built” drawings as required.
  • Perform layout duties Layout Technician as required.
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience
  • Educational and experience requirements include High School diploma or GED; minimum of 3 years of field experience in construction layout; and one year of experience as an instrument man.
  • Survey related expertise in multiple forms of heavy civil construction to include bridge, industrial, heavy highway, piling, marine and/or underground utilities.
  • Leadership ability to supervise & mentor entry level layout personnel.
  • Must be team oriented, able to organize/prioritize multiple projects and embrace change where change is needed.
  • Skilled in the use and care of optical and electrical surveying instruments and equipment (Total Station [Topcon], GPS, Spinning Lasers, Data Collectors, etc.)
  • Proficient in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Able to read construction drawings and specifications in order to establish accurate survey control for a project.
  • Working knowledge of all current survey technologies to include data collectors, total stations, robotic total stations, levels, and GPS based survey systems.
  • Proficiency with survey software, Carlson Software experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Proficient communication skills including verbal and written, interpersonal and organizational.
  • Ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff with strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to commit to the company values.
  • Ability to collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to travel as required which may include out of town travel.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have a dependable vehicle with up-to-date inspection sticker to perform work related duties.
Physical Demands/Work EnvironmentWhile performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to speak and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must the ability to work long hours and drive long distances to and from work; may be required to work some weekends.
