Coding Manager

- Audit medical record documentation to identify undercoded and upcoded services; prepares reports of findings and meets with providers to provide education and training on accurate coding practices and compliance issues.
- Researches, analyzes, and responds to inquiries regarding compliance, inappropriate coding, denials, and billable services.
- Interacts with physicians and other patient care providers regarding billing and documentation policies, procedures, and regulations; obtains clarification of conflicting, ambiguous, or non-specific documentation.
- Trains, instructs, and/or provides technical support to Medical Providers and Medical Coders as appropriate regarding coding compliance documentation, and regulatory provisions, and third party payer requirements.
- Interacts with providers and management to review and/or implement codes and to update charge documents.
- Ensures strict confidentiality of records.
- Attends coding conferences, workshops, and in-house sessions to receive updated coding information and changes in coding and/or regulations.
- Codes encounters and ensures that the coding queue is up to date.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
- Any combination of education, training or experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position preferred may be substituted for the degree preference.
- Must have current coding certification from American Academy of Professional Coders or American Health Information Management Association.
- Knowledge of CFR 42 part 2, HIPAA and HITECH required.
- Four years of coding experience preferred.
- Must maintain strict confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and HITECH Act standards
- Must pass background check pursuant to federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements and State of Alaska background check.
- Membership in AAPC and/or AHIMA required.
- Knowledge of current and developing issues and trends in medical coding procedure requirements.
- Knowledge of auditing concepts and principals.
- Knowledge of patient care charts and documentation standards.
- Strong verbal, written, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and work independently.
