- Assists in crack sealing, asphalt patching, mill and overlay, slurry preparation and resurfacing of roadways.
- Prepares roadways for the application of asphalt by grading and compacting road base. Spreads and compacts asphalt.
- Assists with concrete installation and removal. Assists in floating and finishing concrete.
- Sets up traffic warning signs, traffic cones, barricades, and flags traffic.
- Operates a variety of small hand tools & Equipment.
- Removes snow from roadways.
- May operate some heavy equipment including 10-wheeler, Bobtail Truck and Street Sweeper.
- Maintains tools and equipment by keeping them clean, repaired, and stored securely when not in use; performs minor repairs.
- Complies with OSHA and/or MUTCD safety rules and regulations.
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials, and equipment necessary to perform road/ storm drain construction, landscaping, maintenance/repair, and snow removal work
- Equipment operating principles and procedures
- Hazards and safety precautions common to road/storm drain construction, landscaping, maintenance/repair, and snow removal work
- Pertinent OSHA and/or MUTCD safety rules and regulations
- Salt Lake County geography
- Operate a light truck (pick-up) , bob-tail truck, 10-wheeler dump truck, sander unit, snow-plow unit, and other equipment.
- Use standard and specialized tools and materials common to several trades
- Follow verbal and written procedures and instructions
- Perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions
- Prepare daily records of work performed
- Keep in compliance with and follow standard practices and procedures common to road/storm drain construction, landscaping, maintenance/repair, and snow removal work
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other Departments/Divisions, and the general public
This position requires extensive physical labor (approximately 90% of the time) including, but not restricted to:
lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, standing, walking on uneven ground, and climbing ladders.Applicants must be able to carry objects over 50 lbs. (occasionally up to 100 lbs. with some assistance). This position also involves almost constant exposure to extreme weather conditions, dirt, dust, fumes, chemicals, smoke, and loud noises.
Work is occasionally performed in confined spaces and at heights up to three (3) stories.
Employees are exposed to high volumes of traffic while performing road maintenance work.IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION
