Together, we are powering the growth and success of our community progress every day!Position SummaryThe Engineering Associate position holds the responsibility for the safe, reliable, and economic round-the-clock operation of the generation, electric transmission, and distribution systems. Duties include Engineering responsibilities for the design, construction, maintenance, and operation activities of our power plants, transmission lines, substations, distribution system, gas systems, control centers and others. These Engineering duties may include continuous monitoring and balancing of energy flow and responding to system disturbances, along with all generation, distribution, and transmission activities that provide electric and gas services to customers.Transmission Planning and Operation Engineering is responsible for modeling and analyzing the transmission grid for the operations horizon and the near-term and long-term planning horizons. Activities include identification of corrective action plans, model management, interconnection studies for generation, transmission and end-user interconnections, development of interconnection agreements, and working as a liaison between planning and engineering departments for interconnection projects. Providing technical support to System Operations through daily, weekly and seasonal system outage studies, maintaining state estimator models, maintaining operating procedures, and real-time system models; modeling the transmission system and performing system simulation and associated assessments, as needed both annually and periodically, including, but not limited to, power flow, voltage stability, dynamic stability, subsynchronous resonance, geomagnetic disturbance, EMP, switching surge, and short circuit analyses; Communicating with outside organizations; Maintaining compliance programs; developing study reports and project recommendations; and, developing and maintaining software, databases and associated data.Grade: 12

Participate in model development activities, project tracking and operator training
Represent CPS Energy at ISO stakeholder meetings, participate in ISO working group activities, including travel as needed
Develop study reports, project recommendations and able to provide stand-by support to system operations
Design and update database and other software applications
Monitor and assess NERC reliability standards, participate in audits, and develop compliance-related auditable documentation.
Utilizes established procedures and processes to perform assigned tasks under direct supervision
Develop and implement internal work processes
Attends seminars, continuing education opportunities for professional development
Exhibits engineering judgment/technical expertise
Decisions may have significant impact on timeline, cost, safety, or reliability
Ensures the on-time, on-budget quality delivery of projects
Processes content that is complex with diverse issues and problems

  • Bachelors of Science degree or higher in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university
  • Knowledge of power system analysis fundamentals and power systems analysis software (PSSE, PowerWorld, or TSAT)
  • Experience with project management and contract development.
  • Experience in technical writing or college coursework in technical writing
  • Experience in database applications and/or object-oriented programming (Python, SQL, Visual Basic)
  • Experience with NERC audits and reliability standards
  • Experience with ERCOT policies, protocols and guides
