Job Description:OverviewJob DutiesThe Ambulatory Risk & Patient Safety Specialist serves as a proactive leader in identifying, assessing, and mitigating risk across ambulatory care settings. This role acts as a facilitator of the patient complaint process—ensuring timely triage and resolution by the appropriate department, without assuming direct responsibility for resolution. Additionally, the Specialist supports safety rounds, medication management efforts, and ensures that protocols are in place for high-risk procedures or medications, thereby promoting a culture of safety and compliance in outpatient clinics.This position is responsible for participating in and proactively identifying, tracking, assessing and mitigating potential risks within an outpatient and/or ambulatory healthcare setting. Analyzing data from patient and visitor safety events and complaints. Developing and implementing procedures to reduce or eliminate identified risk. Reviewing and developing policy and procedures to reduce or eliminate risk. Collaborates with key stakeholders across the UF Health Enterprise to support and align with standard operating practices. Promptly addresses allegations, abuse, and adverse incidents in accordance with State of Florida definitions and requirements. Ensures timely management and reporting of sexual misconduct allegations in compliance with Florida Statute 456.063
ResponsibilitiesEssential FunctionsRisk Management & Safety Oversight
  • Identify, monitor, and report emerging risk trends across ambulatory practices.
  • Conduct regular Environment of Care (EOC) and safety rounds with clinic leaders.
  • Review incident reports and near-misses to detect patterns and propose mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with operational leaders and quality teams to implement risk reduction initiatives.
Patient Complaint Facilitation
  • Serve as the process guide for patient complaints—ensuring complaints are documented, tracked, and routed to the appropriate personnel or departments for resolution.
  • Monitor complaint follow-up timelines and escalate when needed.
  • Support clear documentation and reporting of complaint trends to leadership.
High-Risk Medication & Procedure Oversight
  • Identify high-risk medications or procedures occurring in outpatient settings.
  • Collaborate with clinical leadership and pharmacy to develop or update protocols ensuring safe administration and compliance with regulations.
  • Monitor adherence to existing protocols and support education efforts when gaps are identified.
Collaboration & Reporting
  • Partner with Compliance, Quality, Pharmacy, Clinical Educators and Clinical Leadership to ensure aligned efforts around safety and risk.
  • Develop reports and dashboards to communicate safety, risk, and patient experience metrics to stakeholders.
  • Participate in relevant committees and workgroups to share findings and drive process improvements.

QualificationsExperience Requirements
  • Current RN FL License
  • Current BLS Certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross)
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field (Master’s preferred)
  • 2+ years of experience in ambulatory care, risk management, patient safety, or quality improvement
  • Working knowledge of patient complaint resolution processes and regulatory requirements (e.g., CMS, Joint Commission)
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to influence without authority
  • Familiarity with high-alert medications, protocol development, and safety rounding
  • Must obtain Certified Professional in Health Care Risk Management (CPHRM) certification within 2 years of hire
