- Serve as technical lead for contractor-conducted research projects in fish ecophysiology and behavior.
- Lead the design and execution of advanced experiments assessing auditory thresholds and behavioral responses in marine fish species.
- Develop grant proposals and coordinate multi-partner studies.
- Supervise and mentor junior contractor staff, interns, and volunteers.
- Plan and execute laboratory experiments using tools such as Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) with Tucker-Davis Systems and respirometry equipment from Loligo Systems.
- Collect and analyze physiological, behavioral, histopathological, and acoustic data from test subjects.
- Conduct water quality monitoring, animal care, and tank maintenance.
- Process acoustic and metabolic data using software like Biosig and Loligo.
- Calculate metrics including resting/max metabolic rates, ABR thresholds, and sound pressure/particle motion levels.
- Conduct QA/QC and preliminary statistical analyses; prepare audiograms, tables, and figures.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
- Present at scientific conferences and internal NOAA briefings.
- Maintain collaboration networks and liaise with internal and external stakeholders.
- Monthly progress and technical reports summarizing accomplishments, issues, and outcomes.
- Updated SOPs, metadata, and documentation of all experimental procedures and findings.
- Final reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts summarizing key research results.
- Ph.D. in Biology, Marine Science, Physiology, Neuroscience, or related field.
- 5+ years of relevant research experience post-degree.
- Demonstrated expertise in experimental design, acoustic physiology, and statistical analysis.
- Record of peer-reviewed publications.
- Experience with fish tagging techniques and marine animal care.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work irregular hours, including weekends, as needed.
- Ability and willingness to work indoors/outdoors.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license.
- Completion of required NOAA training (e.g., safety, IT security, harassment prevention - Training can be completed after the work has started).
