As an Operating Engineer in a critical facilities environment, you will provide essential maintenance, monitoring, and repair services to ensure uninterrupted operation and optimal performance of highly sensitive building systems. Reporting to a supervisor, you will support continuous operations and preventive maintenance for all major building systems—fire/life safety, mechanical (HVAC, plumbing, controls), electrical (lighting, UPS, PDU, generators, switchgear), emergency backup systems, and hot water systems—while strictly adhering to critical facility protocols and JLL standards.What your day-to-day will look like:
- Monitor, maintain, and perform preventative maintenance on critical facility systems, including HVAC, electrical (lighting, UPS, generators, switchgear), plumbing, controls, fire/life safety, emergency backup, and hot water systems
- Adjust and maintain central plant equipment: refrigeration, chilled water, air conditioning, boilers, ventilators, hot water heaters, pumps, valves, piping, and filters
- Record rounds, readings, logbooks, and engineering data sheets; make operational adjustments to ensure proper equipment performance
- Analyze equipment/system operation, identify causes of malfunctions, and take corrective actions as required
- Install and repair plumbing/piping/tubing; wire single and three-phase motors; run conduit; pull wiring to machinery and operating components; install/rebuild pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, bearings, seals, piping, valves, filters, and controls
- Repair, maintain, and operate critical equipment including UPS systems, generators, chillers, and critical air conditioning units
- Comply with policies and procedures for safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials, maintaining a clean and safe facility
- Oversee contractor activity within the building, ensuring compliance and understanding of critical functions and incident response protocols
- Complete Critical Environment Operations & HSSE training, notify contractors, and ensure all personnel are aware of emergency escalation procedures
- Ensure understanding and adherence to Critical Facility Work Authorization (CWA), and enforce strict compliance with MOP/SOP/EOP work processes
- Maintain and enforce Critical Awareness Process, Technical Bulletins, and established engineering guidelines, processes, and procedures
- Perform additional job duties and support major repairs/maintenance as requested
- Hands-on experience in data center or other critical environment facility, including direct work with UPS systems, emergency generators, and switch-gear equipment
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Operating Engineers license (SMA) or equivalent
- Universal Technician certification for CFC’s
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and CMMS systems
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills; strong organizational and analytical abilities
- Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret technical documents and solve multi-option problems
- Proven commitment to delivering excellent internal and external customer service
- Additional technical or facility certifications relevant to critical environments
- Experience leading or training staff in the operation of critical infrastructure
- Knowledge of MOP/SOP/EOP and change management protocols in critical environments
- Ability to carry out inspections, repairs, and maintenance tasks, including lifting, climbing, working in confined spaces, and responding rapidly in emergencies
- Must be comfortable working in fast-paced, high-risk environments 24/7
