Burlington School District (BSD) is the largest, most diverse single-town school district in the state of Vermont. In School Year 2022-2023 (SY23), BSD served nearly 3,300 PreK - Grade 12 students across 12 centralized campuses and additional locations for Burlington Technical Center programs. The Burlington School District is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Assistant Director of Property Services to join our Property Services Management Team. Under the supervision of the Director of Property Services, this role provides leadership in managing technical trades, overseeing preventive maintenance systems, and ensuring our district facilities are maintained to the highest standards. This position plays a vital role in coordinating the upkeep and safety of all district properties, supporting a healthy learning environment for students and staff.Essential Functions:Inspect and maintain all district buildings in compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations.Evaluate custodial and maintenance staff performance.Approve purchase of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing supplies.Provide staff training for annual in-service programs and other educational sessions.Collaborate with school principals on facility needs.Administer the district work order and preventive maintenance programs.Maintain records in the preventive maintenance system.Assist the Director with capital budgets, annual reports, and projections.Oversee technical trades including HVAC, phone/data/intercom/sound, electrical, fire & security alarms, plumbing, and transportation.Train trades staff in work order and preventive maintenance systems.Manage the District AHERA Asbestos Management Plans and maintain related certifications.Coordinate facility scheduling for vacations and summer use.Lead critical operations during emergencies or closures.Submit and track building and zoning permits.Support energy efficiency and conservation initiatives.Perform additional duties as assigned and serve as Acting Director in their absence.Required Qualifications:Education: High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.Experience: Minimum five years’ experience in commercial trades, plus personnel management experience in team leadership, hiring, training, and evaluation. Experience in union environments preferred.Knowledge & Skills:Strong knowledge of workplace safety laws, zoning regulations, and building codes (OSHA/VOSHA, asbestos/lead management).Experience with building management systems, work orders, and preventive maintenance software.Excellent organizational, documentation, and communication skills using Google Workspace, Excel, and Word.Ability to work effectively with administrators, staff, contractors, and the public.Professional license or building trade certification preferred (HVAC, fire alarm, telecom, etc.).Working Conditions:
This role involves both office and on-site work in a variety of environments, including:Inside and outside conditions, with exposure to weather, noise, dust, and odors.Physical requirements such as standing, walking, climbing ladders, kneeling, lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds, and operating mechanical/electrical equipment.Occasional evening meetings and flexible scheduling are required.EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS:Compensation is based on experience. In addition to great health benefits and paid time off, this full-time position is an hourly position paid Bi-Weekly. Benefits eligible on start date. 30 days to enroll in coverage from start day.
