Site: Shoal CreekAbout the role:We are currently seeking a Operations Manager Trainee to join our warehouse team at our Shoal Creek Mine, located in Oakman, Alabama. Peabody's Shoal Creek Mine has a safety-first culture and strives to have zero recordable MSHA injuries/incidents. Shoal Creek Mine is one of the deepest underground coal mines in the United States. Located on the Black Warrior River, this site produces one of the highest qualities of met coal in the United States. With nine-foot-tall workings, a brand-new longwall, and 15+ years of projected coal reserves, Shoal Creek mine is an ideal place to work.Located in between Jefferson, Walker, and Tuscaloosa counties in Alabama, this area offers beautiful rivers and lakes, landscapes, and rolling hills at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains. Oakman is about an hour from Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, both of which provide diverse, family-friendly communities with something for everyone, such as vibrant downtowns, safe, friendly neighborhoods, and excellent schools, including the University of Alabama and other area colleges.Peabody's Shoal Creek Mine has a safety-first culture and strives to have zero recordable MSHA injuries/incidents.Responsibilities:The responsibilities of the Operations Management Trainee are to provide trainee with the opportunity to learn the business, develop needed skills, obtain necessary certifications, and most opportunity to gain management exposure through meaningful job assignments that give the trainee the opportunity to earn credibility and to develop the reputation as a person of potential and value. This training will assist the trainee to develop skills for the first 6 - 18 months of employment prior to promotion after the program completion to an engineer or supervisory position.Duties will include:The Trainee will have an opportunity to learn the business and develop needed skills in the following areas in the 6 - 18 months of employment.
  • The Trainee will develop in the key mining activities, relevant to their focus, of the operating unit by rotating in each of the different activities of production, outby, engineering, safety, maintenance, preparation, and environmental.
  • Each rotation shall have a learning objective with specific tasks, activities, and/or project assignments that are supervised by an experience manager.
  • Rotational assignments will also provide the trainee the opportunity to interact with miners and various levels of management including presentations to the Operations Manager and/or Department Manager on work results or projects.
  • Substituting for absent supervisors will be part of the trainee's rotations if the trainee is targeted for a supervisory position at the end of the development period.
  • Carry out all duties by following Company safety policies and procedures at all times. Develop skills in the prevention of accidents, injuries, losses, (property and production), by comprehending and interpreting mine-engineering literature, technical data
  • and manuals, Material Safety Data Sheets, Mine Engineering procedures, product labels, warning signs, etc.
  • Learn the fundamentals of Company practice and promote company philosophy of teamwork by contributing to crew meetings and maintaining good working relationships with co-workers.
  • Actively participate in the Peabody Management Trainee Development program, which requires rotating through various Departments and work activities. This may also require working additional hours and/or shiftwork as well as transfers to other Peabody sites for developmental activities.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by Supervisor.

  • BS in Mine, Civil Engineering or Electrica.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective interactions with mine management and operating personnel.
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills are required.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to maintain a positive attitude towards learning and accepting varying job assignments. Required to be self-motivated and display initiative.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to be organized and work with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to work shift work is required.
  • Experience gained from summer internship with engineering or operations functions in a large underground mining application, one year experience is preferred.
  • Supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Drafting / CAD experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State laws associated with the mining industry desirable
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to stand for long duration of time.
  • Must be able to stand, sit, stoop, or bend without issues.
  • Be able to work in varying work conditions (heat, cold, dust, rain, etc.).
  • Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA.
  • Must be able to lift 70lbs on a regular basis.
  • Must have the ability to climb on and off equipment and ladders.
  • Must be able to have vision for close-up computer work as well as distance vision.
  • Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms and legs as well as good hand to eye coordination.
Physical Requirements - Office:
  • Must have the ability to perform office-related tasks which may include prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Must have the ability to move from place to place within an office environment.
  • Must be able to use a computer.
  • Some positions may require occasional repetitive motion or movements of the wrists, hands.
