Description of WorkRecruitment range: $73,096.00 - $131,760.00The Board of Trustees of the Governor Morehead School for the Blind is seeking a Superintendent to lead the Governor Morehead School (“GMS”). Prior experience in administration/leadership at a school for the blind, knowledge of one or more areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum, and a doctoral degree in education are preferred.Governor Morehead School (GMS), located in Raleigh, North Carolina, serves the special needs of visually impaired students in a unique residential setting. When the school was established in 1845, it was the eighth school for the blind in the United States. Equally impressive is that North Carolina was the first state to serve the African American blind and deaf population, beginning just four years after the Civil War. The school moved to its current location on Ashe Avenue in 1923 and was renamed in 1964 in honor of former Governor John Motley Morehead. Aside from being the only residential school in the state for students with visual impairments, GMS is renowned for its excellent program in Orientation and Mobility as well as its Braille Music program.The Superintendent I is the campus' lead administrator and is responsible for providing vision and oversight for all aspects of the school, including but not limited to safety, compliance, academic and social-emotional programming, strategic planning, annual quality improvement/risk management, human resources, and budgeting. The ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, North Carolina State Board of Education, North Carolina Division of Services for the Blind, public school units and other state agencies, North Carolina General Assembly, Governor Morehead Foundation, alumni association, civic organizations, etc.) is critically important. The Superintendent must also regularly evaluate the status of the school's efforts to meet goals, academic and otherwise, established by the school improvement team, leadership team, Board of Trustees and/or other entities and propose/enact changes as appropriate.This position will directly supervise the following: Principal, Digital Learning Director, Human Resources Manager, Business Officer, Student Life Director, Nursing Supervisor, and Administrative Assistant. (Note: The Superintendent in consultation with the Board of Trustees is authorized to make changes in organizational structure in keeping with policy and law.)Candidates should demonstrate a strong ability in:(1) instructional and administrative leadership(2) partnering with community members, school personnel and government officials(3) public relations(4) administration and organization(5) long and short-term planning(6) budgeting(7) personnel management and staff development(8) facility management(9) community involvementStarting July of 2024, GMS was established by the North Carolina General Assembly as an independent state agency. The school is governed by an appointed seven-member board, with five voting members. GMS is on the cusp of pursuing sustained growth in enrollment numbers and in continued academic achievement over the next several years. Simply put, the Board of Trustees is seeking a superintendent who will lead this growth.All applications will be kept confidential. It is preferrable for candidates to be prepared to take office January 1, 2026.The school operates within a regular academic year and a summer program Sunday afternoon through Friday 5:00 P.M. Support services and administration operate a full calendar year. The Superintendent's regular working schedule is Monday-Friday (8am - 5pm). The Superintendent is “on call” status for residential program emergencies. Some evening and weekend work will also be required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / CompetenciesTHIS POSITION SHALL BE HIRED IN ACCORDANCE WITH CHAPTER 115C OF THE NORTH CAROLINA GENERAL STATUTES. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITES INCLUDE:
  • Knowledge of facilities management
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws governing programs and services for children with disabilities
  • Knowledge in utilizing proper interpersonal styles and methods to guide individuals, maintain group cohesiveness, facilitate group processing and obtain agreement/commitment to ideas, plans and courses of action, communicate a vision of challenging goals, growth and progress, model commitment, energy and interaction, build trust and unity, provide directions and gain others' understanding and commitment to courses of action
  • Understanding of writing skills, oral communication skills and organization
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:
  • Knowledge of trends in education of students with visual impairment and/or Deaf/Blindness and services to those students and their families
Knowledge of the Expanded Core Curriculum, Assistive Technology, Accessible Education Materials, and/or Accessibility or Universal Design for Learning.Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsNOTE: Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.
