The Challenge

Premix process engineering role provides support on process improvement and optimization, process scale up, and efficiency projects. Involved in DSM Integrated Continuous Improvement (DICI) and Improve Plant (IP) projects. The role also supports Production, SHEQ, efficiency improvements and capital projects.

The Position
  • Monitor and optimize production processes, investigate process discrepancies, and propose and test potential solutions. Set up, plan, execute, and analyze experiments, report results, and provide recommendations. Risk evaluations on proposed changes (safety and business) for production process changes.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives – use of Lean, 5S, and 6-Sigma approaches and techniques to identify and execute continuous improvement initiatives in our manufacturing operations in support of site safety, waste, quality, and productivity performance. Direct responsibility for cost reduction and streamlining processes.
  • Lead engineering design portion of capital projects including planning, vendor/supplier evaluation, contracting, commercialization, and hand-off to operations at completion
  • Will need to implement measuring tools to analyze proposals and provide data to support projects for capital approvals.
  • Work with multiple levels of employees to determine efficiencies, health, and safety improvements for proposed projects.
  • Working in manufacturing environments that produce premixes in powder and oil form. Sustaining facilities that meet FDA food and dietary supplement standards, and meet DSM safety standards (often above OSHA standards).
  • Exhibit flexibility and adaptability; as the business is a custom design business and is often on the front end of innovative products for our innovative customers.
  • Support Root Cause Analyst with investigations and data collection and analysis to determine corrective actions for addressing internal and external complaints.
  • Identify and optimize product/process variables required for maximizing product/process performance at prototype, lab/pilot, and full-scale production in productivity, yield, and/or operating cost. Provide recommendations conduct evaluation of scale up options, selection, and implementation by leading sub projects, providing project updates, and offering input for the next phases.
  • Develop project plans, estimating project costs, project schedules and resource needs.
  • Execute improvement projects to infrastructure and capabilities; utilize and manage approved contractors during project execution.
  • Develop all necessary documentation to support new/or improved process scale up to manufacturing.
  • Support MSA, JSA, HAZOP, PSA team, MOC, as a part of a cross functional team including workforce and leadership from SHE and Operations. Execute work within the applicable DSM, GMP, OSHA, EPA, ISO, FDA, CE & other requirements
  • Provide in-house technical support to Operations.
  • Follow Design Control and Risk Management procedures.
  • Keep up to date on industrial and academic technologies and exploring opportunities to incorporate them into process development and commercialization process and plant support systems.
  • Direct or participate on project teams with the PMP/Project Management process
  • Complete other tasks as assigned.
The Ideal
  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering or similar required.
Lean Six Sigma Green belt certified preferred.
  • 5+ years of relevant batch process experience preferred (Food & Beverage, Chemical, Pharmaceutical, or related industries)
  • Demonstrated technical skill & experience in process engineering, optimization, and/or scale up of chemical manufacturing processes.
  • Competency with common software packages, such as:
Statistical & Data Analysis / Visualization – Excel, Minitab, R, Power BI, or similar

General Use – Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Good communication skills, written and oral.
