  • Setting up and operating laboratory equipment required for specific experiments. Helping to design and carry out experiments with increasing independence using molecular and cell biology and other relevant scientific approaches. Maintaining a laboratory notebook with accurate and timely documentation of laboratory work.
  • Meeting with the laboratory PI, as needed, to review data and progress and plan future research experimental priorities. Preparing or assisting with preparation of publication-quality figures or written reports for presentation or scientific publication.
  • Assisting with the management of the laboratory mouse colony, including maintaining colony census and record of animal use; obtaining tissue for experimental analyses, including PCR-based genotyping.
  • Assisting with maintaining day-to-day laboratory operations, including monitoring and replenishing supplies and reagents; cleaning and maintaining laboratory equipment; and assisting PI in preparing documents for institutional reporting, such as in maintaining IRB or IACUC protocols or biological/chemical safety protocols.
  • Reviewing work of less experienced laboratory personnel, such as undergraduate students, within designated areas, and assist in training new personnel.

  • The conscientious discharge of research or scholarship responsibilities, which may include teaching responsibilities for Postdoctoral Associates
  • Conformance to standards of responsible conduct in research
  • Compliance with good scholarly and research practice
  • Maintenance of a laboratory notebook and/or other comparable records of research activity, which remains the property of Duke University upon termination
  • Adherence to University standards regarding use of isotopes, chemicals, infectious agents, animals, human subjects, and the like
  • Open and timely discussion with the mentor regarding all facets of the Postdoctoral Appointee's research activities. Postdoctoral Appointees are encouraged to consult the AAMC Compact Between Postdoctoral Appointees and Their Mentors for suggested guidelines for the Postdoctoral Appointee-mentor relationship
  • Prompt disclosure to the mentor regarding the possession and desire to distribute materials, reagents, software, copyrightable and potentially patentable discoveries derived from the Postdoctoral Appointee's research.
  • Collegial conduct towards members of the research group and others as described in the Duke University School of Medicine Honor Code of Professional Conduct and other relevant conduct policies pertaining to other schools at Duke University.
  • Compliance with all applicable University and departmental policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications at this LevelEducation/Training:PhD (or MD with substantial laboratory-based research experience) in a relevant biological science, such as molecular biology, molecular genetics, or cancer biology.Experience:None required above education/training requirement.Skills:Experience from work or laboratory-based educational courses in pertinent molecular and/or cell biology assays and mouse models. A combination of some or all of the following: nucleic acid and protein extraction and measurement; plasmid DNA preparation, manipulation, and analysis; polymerase chain reaction (PCR); agarose and/or SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and blotting; mammalian and/or bacterial cell culture and analysis; fluorescence and light microscopy; experience with personal computer hardware and software for word processing, data storage and analysis, digital image processing, and scientific literature searches.
