This position is responsible for conducting research at the Alaska SeaLife Center under mentorship of Project PI. The research aims to understand and forecast impacts of environmental change on health of marine species, with focus on seabirds and as part of an interdisciplinary team. Areas of research involve physiological ecology of marine organisms, including development of novel laboratory methods to 1) understand responses to environmental change and emerging disease risks, and 2) identify and monitor indicators of health in marine wildlife.Education/Training Requirements:
PhD. degree in zoology, wildlife biology, marine biology, or a related relevant field. Proficiency and experience in marine ecology, physiological ecology, and biochemical laboratory analyses. Proficiency in basic statistical analysis and software, such as R.Essential Duties:
1. Independently manages or assists Project PI on designated experimental and observational research projects.
2. Participates in an interdisciplinary research team to understand individual and population level adaptations and responses of marine species to environmental change and emerging wildlife disease.
3. Develops laboratory capacity, oversees research laboratory operations, and develops and validates laboratory techniques to identify and monitor marine animal health indicators applicable for field research and community-based surveillance of wildlife health.
4. Synthesizes existing information about marine animal population health and disease in Alaska and more broadly in the Arctic. Assists with descriptive and analytical epidemiology approaches to facilitate understanding of patterns and risk factors of disease occurrence.
5. Designs research projects and applies experimental and observational research methods, designs data collection and management systems, and carries out scientific data collection and statistical analysis of data collected.
6. Participates in field research as assigned.
7. Assists in preparation of proposals, reports, posters, presentations, and scientific publications, and takes a lead role as assigned. Assists with and manages permits and budgets for assigned projects.
8. Supervises personnel matters as assigned.
9. Works with other departments to communicate research to Alaska SeaLife Center audiences and to engage non-scientists with marine health research.
10. Represents the research programs to private, local, state, or federal agencies in collaboration with Project PI.
11. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, partners, collaborators, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and providing high standards of service.
12. Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned.Other Skills and Abilities:
Skill in written and verbal communication, experience giving scientific presentations. Ability to follow instructions and work both independently and as part of a research team. Knowledge and experience with spatial data analysis and GIS desired.Physical Requirements:
