Founded in 1993, the HCII is a place where we work to understand and create technology that harmonizes with and improves human capabilities, goals, and social environments through interdisciplinary research and education in design, computer science, and behavioral and social sciences.We are seeking a full-time Research Assistant to support the MuFIN (Multimodal Feedback Generation using Generative Artificial Intelligence) and PartiMeas (Participatory Measurement for AI) projects. MuFIN is pioneering Generative AI-based systems for automated, multimodal feedback in education, with applications in AI in education, learning analytics, and instructional design. PartiMeas is pioneering methods and interactive tools to support non-technical stakeholders in collectively shaping measurement approaches for Generative AI evaluation. The selected candidate will work directly with the leadership for each project and contribute to all stages of the research pipeline, from system development to deployment and evaluation in authentic learning environments.This position is based in Pittsburgh, PA, with primary work at the Carnegie Mellon campus.Core Responsibilities:
Conduct literature reviews on Generative AI in education, learning sciences, and multimodal feedback.
Analyze qualitative and quantitative data from user studies.
Assist in the design, recruitment, and coordination of human-subject experiments under IRB protocols.
Contribute to both front-end and back-end development for MuFIN systems (SlideItRight and VTutor) and PartiMeas systems (PartiMeas Toolkit), ensuring smooth integration of LLM-based features and interactive UI/UX components.
Collaborate with the team to refine feedback generation algorithms and system interfaces for MuFIN, as well as interfaces for stakeholder participation in PartiMeas.
Conduct software testing and debugging to ensure performance and scalability.
Perform other duties as assigned

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Learning Sciences, or a related field.
Strong programming skills in Python and/or R, with experience in web technologies (JavaScript, HTML, CSS).
Basic knowledge of AI in education and/or learning sciences.
Prior experience with both front-end and back-end development.
Familiarity with AI tools and APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Hugging Face, or similar).
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
A combination of education and proven experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
