Position Summary/Purpose of Position:The University of Maryland (UMD), University Health Center (UHC) seeks a full time psychiatrist to provide direct care to a diverse student patient population. The purpose is to conduct psychiatric evaluations and to provide intake assessments, ongoing medication management, therapy, as well as consultative work with other departments needed. The psychiatrist will be expected to meet assigned productivity standards as defined and as directed by the Behavioral Health Director.The psychiatrist will also work with other UHC departments, including General Medicine (primary care, women's health, transgender care, The Counseling Center, etc.) This is to collaborate on shared patients, consult on mutual patients, and offer urgent evaluations from these departments.This is a full time exempt position. The psychiatrist will be expected to carry a full patient census during their clinical schedule. Typically the service is busy during the academic year and slows down over the summer and during winter and spring breaks.The psychiatrist will be expected to provide direct patient care that includes intakes, medication management follow up, triage, urgent triage, etc. At times, this care may extend beyond regular duty hours. Currently, a full-time position would entail working from 8:30-5:00, M-F. Call from home is also equitably shared among psychiatric providers (six providers if this position is included). Each provider takes one week (seven days) call from home and this responsibility rotates once every six weeks.New visits are currently scheduled for one hour, and follow up visits for 30 minutes; visit times are subject to change depending on need. Daily administrative time (for note writing, etc.) currently includes 1.5 hours of those eight working hours (not including a 30 minute lunch).Essential Duty/Responsibility (1): Provide direct psychiatric services to UMD students, including the assessment, diagnosis and continuing management of students with mental health conditions, including medication management and psychotherapy as medically indicated. Collaborate with BH therapists with whom they share patients, offering psychiatric guidance and supervision as/when appropriate. Be readily available during office hours to provide urgent evaluations of patients referred from other UHC departments and other campus entities. Must maintain complete and timely chart notes per UHC and university policy. May be asked to clinically supervise professional staff, including psychiatric residency trainees as assigned.
Percentage: 75%Essential Duty/Responsibility (2): Be willing to take emergency calls in a call rotation as directed by the Behavioral Health Director (currently one week rotated amongst each psychiatrist/psychiatric nurse practitioner). Psychiatrist must be available to assess need for hospitalization and assist with the hospital admission process of patients as needed. Liaise with hospital re: post-hospitalization care as needed.

  • M.D./D.O. from accredited Medical School
  • All residency and post-graduate training from accredited American programs.
Experience:
  • Experience that comes from (at least) the completion of an accredited residency program, with added years of post-residency experience as a plus. Experience working with young adults would be of benefit. Some level of post-residency hospital (inpatient, PHP, IOP) is also a plus, as is basic knowledge of substance use related diagnosis and treatment.
  • Licensed to practice psychiatry in the State of Maryland.
  • Experience working with college students in the area of mental health is preferred.

  • Working with a college student population preferred.
  • Commitment to actively engage in practice with diverse populations.
  • Commitment to one's own ongoing development of multicultural competence as a psychiatrist.
