  • Officer In Charge of Engineering Watch III/1 (or III/2)*
  • Proficiency in the Use of Survival Craft VI/2
  • Basic Training (BT) (Formerly Basic Safety Training (BST)) VI/1
  • Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties VI/6
  • *For bids after 12/ 31/2016: STCW may not have the limitation “Not Valid after December 31, 2016” (STCW complies with 2010 Manila Amendments)
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)

What you will be doing:As the 3rd Assistant Engineer, you will oversee the safe and efficient operation of engineering machinery, equipment, and spaces, meticulously logging relevant data. Your responsibilities extend to conducting routine maintenance and repairs on engine room machinery and auxiliary equipment, as well as supervising repairs performed by technicians in shipyards or other shore-side facilities. In addition to your crucial role in monitoring and ensuring the functionality of the engineering systems, you will actively participate as a leader in lifeboat and emergency response teams. A key aspect of your role involves ensuring that all personnel on watch are well-informed and execute their duties effectively.   • Have working knowledge of diesel engines.
  • Have working knowledge of boilers, deck machinery, electrical, refrigeration, and sanitary equipment aboard ship.

  • Possess working knowledge of proper safety operating procedures for all emergency systems and equipment utilized onboard the vessel.

  • Have working knowledge of proper method to be followed for fire, boat, emergency drills, and abandon ship drills.
  • Have working knowledge of proper procedure to be used in rescue operations.
  • Have basic knowledge of proper procedure to be used in official vessel log entries.

  • Have excellent communication skills, in the English language, both verbally and written.
  • Have knowledge of safe handling of cleaning products and machinery to ensure crew safety.

AMHS vessel operations are a 24/7 work environment with variable crew assignments. In general, you will be assigned to a vessel on a 2 Weeks On - 2 Weeks Off schedule, working an average of 84 hours per week. This position dispatches out of Ketchikan or Juneau in Alaska which we call the Home Ports. A new hire would need to be residing within the vicinity of these Home Ports to increase their ability to pick up assignments. Your daily schedule during your vessel assignments may vary from 8 hours to 12 hours and you may be asked to work split shifts. AMHS dispatch department handles all vessel assignment related matters. Assignments are posted periodically by dispatch. Vessel supervisors set your daily tasks and work schedule once onboard. You may be asked to switch/upgrade positions during your assignments.Routes and Assignments
AMHS operates in two distinctive regions. The Southeast (SE) route serves the communities between Bellingham, WA and Skagway, AK. The majority of AMHS vessels operate in this region. The other, more remote and smaller region is the Southwest (SW), which includes the communities between Cordova and the Aleutian Chain.
