Services include maintenance, repair, renovation, project management, capital construction, housekeeping and grounds-keeping operations. HFS has approximately 190 full-time employees and approximately 80 part-time and student staff, who all strive to give residents the best living experience possible.What Your Key Responsibilities Will BeAdministration/Performance Management
  • Manage the work of full-time, seasonal and student employees in the following functions; turf management, irrigation and snow removal operations.
  • Establish training needs, set work standards and schedules, identify and prioritize assignments, supervise and guide work in progress, approve and/or correct the final results for these functions.
  • Ensure accurate accounting of labor for subordinate staff in Kronos by reviewing and approving regular hours worked, overtime, sick leave, requests for time off and proper documentation of OJI cases.
  • Provide leadership, coaching and performance management for assigned employees.
  • Create and update position descriptions to accurately reflect job duties. Interview and hire subordinate positions.
  • Manage expenses for turf and irrigation operations.
  • Coordinate with University purchasing agents on vendor bids, service agreements and purchase orders to ensure proper allocation of funds.
  • Review and approve special events requests to mitigate damages to the HDS landscape. Other duties as assigned.
Irrigation Maintenance
  • Supervise and assist with the seasonal start up, shutdown, and routine maintenance of the HDS irrigation system.
  • Schedule regular inspections to ensure optimal head performance and coverage.
  • Arrange for the timely repair of heads, valves, lateral pipe, main-lines, and wiring, and assist with repairs as needed.
  • Establish expectations, perform inspections, and hold subordinates accountable for quality of work.
  • Assist Turf and Irrigation Manager with proper operation of Toro Network 8000 central irrigation computer system and associated radio control devices.
Turf Program Management
  • Implement, supervise, and coordinate cultural turf management practices including aeration, overseeding, topdressing, fertilization and weed/pest control for all HDS turf areas.
  • Responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and calibration of tractors, implements, and specialized turf equipment.
  • Operate and maintain the Williams Village “compost tea” fertilizer injection system under the direction of the Turf and Irrigation Manager.
  • Keep comprehensive and accurate records of turf applications throughout the growing season.
  • Conduct annual soil testing and analysis to determine fertilizer nutrient and application rates.
  • Assist in development and implementation of a comprehensive weed control program to include the strategic use of saturated steam.
  • Lead HFS Grounds staff in the renovation of damaged or unmanageable turf.
  • Work with Turf and Irrigation Manager and contractors to ensure new sod installations are of high quality and in accordance with campus standards.
  • Assist in the development of standard methodologies for organic and pesticide free turf management in a campus setting with high expectations and heavy traffic.
Pond Management
  • Support and work with licensed contractor to manage Kittredge Ponds.
  • Regularly supervise water quality between site visits and report any adverse conditions.
  • Apply supplemental water treatment products, under direction of licensed contractor, as needed.
  • Monitor aeration and injection systems for proper function and report problems to contractor.
  • Schedule fill valve to open as needed to maintain proper pond level and ditch flow-through during the irrigation season.
Snow Removal and Ice Abatement
  • Remove snow and ice from streets, parking lots, sidewalks, and other areas as assigned. Apply sand/salt or anti-icing chemical mixtures using various equipment.
Vehicle, Equipment and Tool Maintenance
  • Responsible for the proper use, maintenance, and care of all assigned equipment (tractors, mowers, utility vehicles, handheld power equipment, tools, etc.).
  • Complete regularly assigned preventative maintenance (PMs) and schedule additional maintenance or repairs as needed.
  • Report any missing equipment and all accidents that result in physical damage to University vehicle(s) or property to CUPD, Risk Management, and the Transportation Center as required.
Safety
  • Adhere to all HFS and University safety guidelines and policies.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of vehicles, equipment and tools.
  • Seeks instruction on safe operating procedures from Supervisor as needed and uses personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

  • Four (4) years of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position

  • A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to four (4) years.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Bachelor's or associate's degree in turf management or related field. Experience in organic turf management preferred.
