  • Supervises trains and evaluates staff
  • Assigns cases to staff
  • Directs staff regarding casework and treatment strategies
  • Plans and coordinates the activities of a unit
  • Assists in development of policies and procedures
  • Ensures staff compliance with applicable laws, procedures and policies
  • Recommends and may perform disciplinary actions
  • Provides information and statistics, and prepares reports and correspondence
  • May perform duties of line staff
Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to: driving; sitting at desk; working with and around other staff and clients; repetitive motion (hand-wrist) for writing and typing; vision-acuity (near) for reading and writing; hearing and speech (ordinary conversation) for interviews, fieldwork and communicating with staff and the public; touch (finger dexterity) for typing and writing.Minimum QualificationsMaster's degree in criminal justice, behavioral science, or business/correctional/public administration and two years' experience as a probation/parole officer, social worker, of which one year of that experience is as a lead probation officer or supervisor in a correctional or residential treatment setting; ORBachelor's degree in one of the above cited fields and three years of experience in the above areas; of which one of the years is as a lead probation officer or supervisor in a correctional or residential treatment setting ORAny equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, but must have Bachelor's degree which is required by (ARS 8-203).ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS (Juvenile):Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license. Must successfully complete a criminal history check relevant to employment since persons convicted of a felony may not be childcare workers in Arizona.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Adult):Bachelor's degree with a preference being given to a major or minor in the behavioral sciences (Supreme Court Order 73-1 TR-ADM-PROB) and three years progressively responsible experience as a probation officer; of which one year of that experience is as a lead probation officer or supervisor in a correctional or residential treatment setting OR, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS (Adult):Must successfully complete a criminal history check relevant to employment. Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Must achieve a certification of completion/proficiency of 40 hour Defensive Tactics Academy with annual 8-12 hour review. If Probation Officer chooses to be armed, must attend and pass 40 hour Firearms Academy and maintain a 20 hour annual "shoot" for recertification purposes; complete a minimum of 16 hours of on-going education within the judicial system certified by the Committee on Judicial Education and Training (COJET); may be required to attend Faculty Skills Development Class and become statewide instructor.This position is exempt from overtime and is at-will.This position is safety sensitive.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesConsiderable knowledge of:- Principles of human behavior- Behavior and adjustment problems and approaches to treatment- Principles and practices of case management and probation services- Principles and practices of positive supervision, training and evaluation- Applicable state laws and administrative rules- Court policies and procedures- State and local correctional and service agencies and their programs, and community resourcesSome knowledge of:- Planning and budgetary policies and procedures- Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipmentSkill in:- Personal interaction, counseling and interviewingAbility to:- Plan, review, and direct the work of others- Communicate and deal effectively with offenders, family members and others- Understand, interpret, and apply state laws and administrative rules, court procedures, and directives, and County policies and procedures- Prepare and maintain complex records and reports- Make sound casework decisions independently and in accordance with established policies and procedures- Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, clients, other agencies and the public- Follow written and verbal instructions- Communicate effectively verbally and in writingCoconino County is an Equal Opportunity Employer.AmeriCorps, Peace Corps and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply.Employee BenefitsCoconino County offers a comprehensive employee benefits
