Hybrid: In-office one day per week at one of two Vermont locations- for an outstanding candidate open to discussion of workplace expectation.Position Overview
The Tax Compliance Specialist will support the organization and its subsidiaries in managing tax risks across the consolidated group and
maintaining compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations. This role provides tax advice and guidance while supporting the Tax
Manager, senior management, and the Head of Tax at the parent company. The ideal candidate will collaborate extensively across the corporate
parent and subsidiaries to ensure accurate interpretation and application of tax laws to various strategic business lines. Success in
this role will require strong technical tax knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to navigate a complex and evolving
organizational structure.Key Responsibilities- Tax Compliance: Oversee the preparation and review of federal, state, and local tax returns, ensuring full compliance with all applicable tax laws and regulations.- Tax Provision & Reporting: Lead the preparation and review of quarterly and annual tax provisions, including compliance with ASC 740 (Income Taxes), for utility-related operations.- Tax Remittance: Ensure timely and accurate processing and remittance of all tax-related payments and deposits.- Tax Forecasting: Support the tax forecasting process by preparing projections of tax obligations, assessing the impact of new tax laws
or business changes, and advising leadership on tax strategies to optimize cash flow.- Mergers & Acquisitions: Assist with tax-related due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, and strategic transactions, identifying risks, opportunities, and structuring alternatives.- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to utility-specific tax regulations, including energy, state/local tax, and environmental tax issues.- Tax Strategy & Planning: Support the development and implementation of tax strategies aimed at minimizing liabilities, managing risk, and maximizing tax efficiency.- Audit Support: Assist in coordinating tax audits and interface with external auditors, tax authorities, and legal teams to resolve issues and ensure favorable outcomes.- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with finance, accounting, legal, and operations teams to ensure tax-efficient execution of business initiatives and capital projects.- Research & Monitoring: Monitor federal and state tax law changes—including utility-specific incentives or regulatory shifts—and assess their implications for the company.- Team Leadership: Mentor junior tax staff by providing training, guidance, and performance feedback. Monitor internal billing hours for efficiency and accuracy.- Process Improvement: Identify and implement enhancements to internal controls and tax compliance processes to improve efficiency and
