
ASL Interpreter (Elementary, MS, and HS Openings)

- Provide proof of one of the following:
- (1) Passed the National Association of the Deaf/Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (NAD/RID) National Interpreter Certification (NIC) examination after November 30, 2011; or
- (2) Passed one of the following examinations administered by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID): 1. Oral Transliteration Certificate (OTC); or 2. Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI); or
- (3) Passed the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) with a score of 3.5 or above after December 31, 1999; or
- (4) Passed the Cued Language Transliterator National Certification Examination (CLTNCE) administered by The National Certifying Body for Cued Language Transliterators; orInspections and Appeals[481] Ch 961, p.2 IAC 2/5/25
- Currently holds one of the following NAD/RID certifications awarded through November 30, 2011, by the National Council on Interpreting (NCI):
- 1. National Interpreter Certification (NIC); or
- 2.National Interpreter Certification Advanced (NIC Advanced); or
- 3. National Interpreter Certification Master (NIC Master); or
- Currently holds one of the following certifications previously awarded by the RID:
- 1. Certificate of Interpretation (CI); or
- Certificate of Transliteration (CT); or
- Certificate of Interpretation and Certificate of Transliteration (CI and CT); or
- Interpretation Certificate/Transliteration Certificate or
- Comprehensive Skills Certificate (CSC); or
- Currently holds one of the following certifications previously awarded by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD):
- NAD III (Generalist); or
- NAD IV (Advanced); or
- NAD V (Master); or
- Currently holds an advanced or master certification awarded by the Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI).
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Para Certificate or Post-Secondary Education preferred
- Experience in a K-12 education system is preferred
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable
- Provide accurate and effective sign language interpretation for classroom instruction, meetings, and school activities.
- Confer and plan with the educational team to prepare for interpreting.
- Assist with classroom modifications when appropriate, as determined by the student’s IEP, educational team, or in consultation with other direct service personnel
- Facilitate communication between students, educators, and peers to ensure understanding and participation.
- Work closely with special education staff, general education teachers, and other support personnel to adapt instructional materials and methods to meet the needs of students.
- Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to the development of appropriate communication strategies.
- Assist in developing a positive, inclusive environment that promotes student engagement and success.
- Stay updated on best practices in sign language interpretation and special education.
- Maintain accurate records of services provided and contribute to documentation for IEPs and progress reports.
- May support in the transition of students on and off the bus, as well as when needed riding the bus to support students based on student needs. All personnel supporting students with individual educational plans should anticipate supporting occasional and up to consistent bus riding and must complete bus rider training (to be provided upon hire).
- Create and maintain positive working relationships with the school community, students, and other employees.
- May interpret for school-sponsored functions outside of the classroom during regularly scheduled hours.
