The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) is a living laboratory where we investigate the relationship between computer technology, human activity, and society. Founded in 1993, the HCII is a place where we work to understand and build technology that harmonizes with and improves human capabilities, goals, and social environments through interdisciplinary research and education in design, computer science, and behavioral and social sciences. We research how people work, play, and communicate within groups, organizations, and social structures, then we design, build, and evaluate technologies and tools to support human and social activities.In this role, successful candidates will manage a new program for the training of educational technology entrepreneurs across Africa. This program consists of a number of components, including online courses, in-person and remote workshops, and mentoring support for hundreds of entrepreneurs in 8 countries who are participating in a startup technology accelerator in their country. The successful candidate will assist faculty in coordinating across these accelerators at a high level to assess accelerator and entrepreneur needs and aspirations. They will plan upcoming programming that meet these needs and aspirations, including managing travel opportunities for in-person events, aligning across program components by setting focus and guiding the direction of other team members, and tracking timelines and schedules to ensure that we are meeting our goals. They will additionally support evaluation and assessment of the program in order to drive improvement.Excellent communication and organization skills are essential for this role as the candidate will be coordinating with accelerators, CMU staff, entrepreneurs, and the funder of the program. This should include the implementation and use of project management tools to facilitate the work of the whole team. Because the CMU team is small, this role also is likely to include project management responsibilities as well, depending on which program component may need support at any particular moment.Your core responsibilities include:
  • Program management, including identifying new opportunities for delivering value to learners in the program.
  • Communicating with external partners
  • Overseeing team members’ work
  • Assisting faculty and team in the identification and implementation of program goals
  • Setting timelines and schedules for meeting program goals
  • Managing program budgets
  • Aligning deliverables with program outcomes and monitoring progress, including supporting the development of evaluation rubrics
  • Staying abreast of emerging technology developments, potential pedagogical applications, and associated educational research.
  • Understanding and implementing existing evidence-based methods to:
  • facilitate group projects with remote participants.
  • replicate the on-campus experience online to create a coherent cohort.
  • Developing resources, supporting, and educating instructors about relevant technology options and relevant instructional principles to enhance learning. Employing effective strategies for efficiently integrating these new technological options into courses, modules, and instructional activities.
Qualifications:
  • A Master’s degree in learning experience design, program management or a related area required.
  • 2+ years of experience working with educational programming including online courses, workshops, or other types of learning experiences.
  • Experience promoting the effective use of educational technology.
  • Ability to consult with instructors, entrepreneurs and other staff across disciplines and contexts.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in settings of social and intellectual diversity
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in program management tools.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in learning experience design, instructional design, HCI, or a related area.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience embedding data hooks to analyze instructional effectiveness and/or developing educational technology tools.
  • Familiarity with the latest research in learning science and faculty development
  • Proven experience effectively using quantitative and/or qualitative research methods or learning analytics.
  • Experience working in African contexts.
